Old School Outboard Motors To Rev Up Schroon

It’s gonna be a busy day at the Town Park on Sunday, September 17  – with not only the 1 Eye Classic Bike Ride and Picnic, but also the 11th annual Mohawk Hudson Chapter of the Antique Outboard Motor Club show and swap meet.

Outboard motor enthusiasts-- from as far away as Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Vermont -- are expected for the event, according to the organizers.

The Antique Outboard Motor Club event is billed as a “wet event” – that’s boaters and their motors in the water.

From humble beginnings 11-years ago, when the event attracted around 30 outboard motor heads, organizers of this year’s meet are optimistic the event could attract around 100 people.

The timing of the swap meet and show, just after Labor Day, is good for boat enthusiasts to launch their vessels on an un-crowded lake. In recent years, the event has attracted enthusiasts who have launched very zippy hydroplane boats, with modified 10 horsepower engines that can hit speeds up to 60 miles per hour.

Organizers said the Club has enjoyed a good relationship with the town, and a side benefit to Schroon was bringing tourist dollars in an off-peak time, especially from folks traveling from afar “who need accommodations and places to eat.”

The event kicks off at 9 am Sunday, but Glenn expects some early birds well before that, who are there to scout out the bargains.  For more information, contact Michael Glenn at 518-505-3558.

10 Years Young: The Lance Gregson 1-Eye Classic

A scene from the 2015 Ride.

Hard to believe, but the upcoming annual Lance Gregson 1-Eye Classic celebrates 10 years of celebrating life on a bike!

The classic features various cycling rides and very fun picnic. Save the date: Sunday, Sept. 18. The action starts and ends at Schroon’s Town Park and Beach.

The event is meant to encourage cyclists to get to know each other and have a good time while riding with friends, so there is no formal registration. That morning just sign a waiver, meet some other happy cyclists, grab a map and get on yer bike!

After the ride, there is a potluck picnic, awesome music and a chance to win some cool prizes in various raffles.

There are routes of 3 miles, 10-15 miles, and 26 miles and 45 miles that are titled Easy Does It, Scenic Route, Lance’s Loop, and Cyclist’s Dream. Click here, for more details.

The Labor Day Weekend Rewind

Saturday’s weather was simply spectacular, enjoyed by hundreds and hundreds who packed the Community Wide Garage Sale in the Town Park. As day turned to night hundreds enjoyed Schroon's Annual Labor day Street Dance, with Willie Playmore and fireworks.

Sunday was a soggy, rain soaked affair, but that didn’t deter two keen and dedicated dads (above) from taking advantage of a deserted town beach for some kayak training.

Labor Day Monday was a day to celebrate the lake, the glorious sunshine and the fact the Schroon is in our lives.
