Lake News: October

The level of Schroon Lake may be literally up and down over the next few weeks, due to rain and the Starbuckville dam gates being closed.

We are getting word on the closures from Horicon Town Supervisor Matt Simpson, who says there’s a very good reason for the gates being closed.

“This is in cooperation with emergency first responders who are training in the Schroon River. We are fortunate to have the best swift water rescue units in NYS ready when we need them. ‘Thank You’ is not enough for the many hours of training they put in to be prepared when a need should arise. Thanks to all for your collaborative effort and understanding”

Three properties in Schroon will go under the hammer next Wednesday at the second Essex County Tax Auction of the year. Many readers will recall the year's first auction, which launched one of the most controversial chapters in the history of North Hudson, after all hell broke loose after four parcels of land at the old Frontier Town became very hotly disputed. As of this writing there are 82 properties listed. That number may decrease if those who owe back taxes cough up some cold cash before next Wednesday.

The properties in Schroon are located at:

4 Center Street, Town of Schroon

Severance Road, Town of Schroon

Charley Hill Road, Town of Schroon

There are seven properties in nearby Chestertown, six in Minerva, 14 in Moriah and seven in Ticonderoga. The auction is being held by Haroff Auction and Realty, Inc. All the information you need can be found here.
