Kathy & Dan Riggins (posthumously): Schroon Lake Citizens of 2016

Two very deserving folks have been named by the Schroon Lake Area Chamber of Commerce as the town’s Citizens of the Year for 2016.

Since retiring here in 2001, Kathy and Dan Riggins put their volunteerism first in everything they did, working tirelessly and selflessly for dozens of worthy causes.

Tragically, last August, Dan passed away on the town tennis courts, playing the game he loved.

“There was an outpouring of love and support for Kathy after Dan’s passing. They did everything together as a couple in their numerous volunteering efforts,” Tammy Whitty-Brown, the executive director of the Schroon Lake Area Chamber of commerce told us today.

“When we opened up the nominations for the Citizens of 2016, there were many folks in the community who wanted to give this honor to Dan and Kathy.

“The body of what they have done for Schroon, both as a couple and individually is amazing. This is an award that honors the work of this couple, work which Kathy continues to do today.”

The number of organizations the couple volunteered for is jaw dropping. Our first contact with dan came when he introduced the readers of Schroon Laker to sport of Pickleball, his second favorite game on the courts.

You can read more about Dan and Kathy’s achievements and their life in the official press release, after the jump.

The Chamber will host a dinner on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at 6pm at Schroon’s Word of Life Inn.  Tickets are available for $25 per person.

“So great was their impact in this community we are expecting a huge crowd,” Tammy said.
