A scene from the movie "The Night We Met"

Two years ago the hamlet of Adirondack was abuzz when filmmakers started shooting a feature film in and around the Adirondack General Store.

The filmmakers fell in love with the area and shot more of the film in and around Schroon Lake than they had expected.  The result is a three hour indie feature: "The Night We Met".

Several locals appear as extras in the film, which has its world premiere at the Strand Theatre this weekend.

The film is  directed and co-written by filmmakers Jon and Tracy Cring, of Troy. It’s the story of “an unforgettable night” shared by two young lovers.

Producer Stan Denis discovered the General Store and thought it would make an ideal setting with our lake and nearby mountains.

Other local landmarks in the film include the Strand Theatre and Seagle Music Colony.

The Crings will attend the screenings of the three hour film on Saturday and Sunday nights at 8pm. NCPR’s Todd Moe caught up with the film maskers. You can hear his report, here.

Schroon’s Annual Adirondack Folk Music Festival

The Friends Union Band, one of the acts at this Sunday's event!

One of the premiere music events of the summer season celebrates its 27th anniversary Sunday. And the event – proudly sponsored by the Schroon Lake Arts Council – is bigger and better than ever.

The concert features a who’s who of top line performers: Jamcrackers, Roy Hurd and Skip Smithson, Friends Union Band, Runaway Home and The Nields. The show is MC’d by Rod Driscoll.

This event  -- at the Schroon lake Town Park -- has become a destination event for folk music lovers  who come from all over the east coast, according to Schroon Lake Arts Council President Jack Osbourne.

Few folks know the history of the event   -- and its direct ties to folk legend Pete Seeger and Hollywood star Alan Arkin. And it’s all because of one Schroon Laker: Flora Wilson Whitty.

We discovered these gems a couple of years back when Jack passed onto us an amazing story  about the festival's roots, written by by Benjamin Pomerance of the Lake Champlain Weekly.

Locals Dan Berggren and Darlene Gregson also get special mentions for their efforts in bringing the festival to life!

Annual ADK Shindig Saturday

The hamlet of Adirondack comes alive with all day activities and a concert, Saturday.

A huge garage sale, concert, dancing and a sumptuous picnic, are the highlights of the Shindig, now in its third year.

The day kicks off at 9 am with a community yard sale at the Recreation Field. The sale runs until 3 pm.

At 4pm Church Street is closed for music and dancing, featuring the “Open Mic Gang”. Folks are encouraged to bring  their own chairs, sit back and enjoy the show, Picnic style food will be offered from The Adirondack General Store and Buttinos Italian Bistro.

Spokesman says John Donovan says the Shindig benefits the Town of Horicon Historical Society’s Museum Annex. The 1881 Church in Adirondack is in need of major repairs.

From John:

“Monies contributed through donations and raffles will go toward the restoration of this historic building. Over the last 2 years, the Adirondack Shindig has raised over $5,000 to the cause”.

For any last minute changes( rain date, etc.) check out the Horicon Historical Society Facebook page. For more information call John at 518 494-7432.
