Governor Andrew Cuomo is asking the Federal Government to rule the storing of old oil tank rail cars in The Adirondack Park is illegal, reports the Times Union.
Cuomo told reporters the state Department of Environmental Conservation is asking the Federal Surface Transportation Board to rule that Chicago-based Iowa Pacific Holdings, which owns the Saratoga & North Creek Railway, "has legally abandoned the line for the allowed purpose of freight hauling".
If this ruling is approved, it could allow the state to retake possession of the 30-mile line, which runs from Tahawus in the Adirondacks High Peaks to North Creek in Warren County, Some rail cars have already been stored on the line near Tahawus.
There's more on the story from Peter Bauer, the Executive Director of Protect the Adirondacks, which you can read about here.
