Get The Fever at The Fort: Soldiers of Color at Ticonderoga for Black History Month

This Sunday (February 11),  Fort Ticonderoga’s “Fort Fever Series” continues at 2 pm  with a program about the diversity of soldiers who fought at Ticonderoga. The presentation examine's how attitudes about soldiers of color varied dramatically within the numerous armies and empires that held Ticonderoga. This program is part of the National Black History Month celebration.

More from Fort Ti:

“The great campaigns of the French & Indian War and Revolutionary War have frequently been envisioned with long battle lines of soldiers as equally white as they were uniform. However, small, but significant numbers of African or African-American soldiers appear in nearly every army that came to Ticonderoga. Differences between the French army and Canadian irregulars or between states of the new United States also played out in different attitudes about soldiers of color in the ranks. Events like the 1757 massacre at Fort William Henry revealed Canadian involvement in the captive and transatlantic slave trade. The presence of African-American soldiers among New England regiments at Ticonderoga was deeply resented by other American officers. Even as the American Army faced a vast British Army in 1777, the removal of these African-American soldiers from the ranks was considered a priority by many officers”

Tickets are $12 per person and can be purchased at the door; Fort Ticonderoga Members and Ticonderoga Ambassador Pass holders are admitted free of cost. The program will take place in the Mars Education Center.

Big Snow For the Adirondacks and Schroon: Bring It!

tonyschrronfeb5weather.png

I think it’s fair to say winter is a season with pro "Bring It" and con "Where's Spring?" fans. Those on the “Bring It” side would be winter sports and outdoor cold activity lovers, those who don’t have to (or don’t mind) shoveling their driveways, those who get excited by forecasts, like the one heading our way. The one with an eight to 12 inch dump starting early Wednesday. No prizes for guessing where I stand.

Moreover, those fans are looking forward to fresh powder to ski, fresh tracks to make cross-country skiing and snow shoeing, and those looking forward to this Saturday’s Annual Poker Run. And for the latest, we turn to Schroon’s Most Trusted Weatherman, Tony Tenda and his companion Tony's Schroon Lake Weather Page

From Tony: “I've always believed we here in the Adirondacks get our snow in clusters over a couple week period. This week I feel we are now into one of those spells. Heavy snow starts in the morning Wed. ends later Wed evening. 8-12" looks to be a good bet right now. If we had some downstream atmospheric blocking this would be a 18-24" type storm, but it's just not there”.

And below is  an early look-see at the three day Presidents weekend.
