Schroon Lake’s First Night
Fireworks, a live band, dancing, a ton of fun for the kids and a bon fire are the headliners at Schroon Lake’s First Night celebration on New Tear’s Eve.
This very family friendly event kicks off at 5 pm at the Schroon Lake Central School with a series of activities for kids -- and a dance band for all ages -- before culminating at 9pm with a spectacular Fire Works display.
The event is being sponsored by the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber traditionally hosted the Town’s Christmas Celebration, but at a meeting in the Spring, members decided to try something different, according to Tony Kostecki, one of the organizers.
“The last time Schroon did a first night was in 2003/2004, for the town’s 100th anniversary,” Tony told Schroon Laker today.
“It was very successful then and we thought it was time to bring it back.”
The fun starts at 5 pm at SLCS with a performance by Sylvia Fletcher & the Magic Trunk, followed at 5.30 pm with face painting and kids craft stations. (Sylvia does encore performances at 6.30 and 8 pm)
Also at 5 there’s a sock hop with local favorites Loose Connections, til 9pm.
“The events at the school will be going on simultaneously,” Tony said. There will be food available from the school’s various classes and booster clubs.
Beginning at 8.30 pm in the Town Park there will be a luminary display leading to a Bon Fire, music and hot chocolate.
“Depending on how much snow we have, the bon fire will either be on the beach or further up in the park. We are working with the Town and the Fire Department. It should be a good sized fire.”
At around 9 pm the night sky will light up with a fireworks display. It will be a shorter program compared to the July 4th and Labor day events because of the expected chilly temperatures.
Admission to all events at SLCS is $5 for adults, kids 4 and under are free and it’s $2 for kids 4 to 18. For large family groups there’s a special offer: the first two children are regular price, and the rest are free (with 1 adult admission).
