Congratulations Kate Huston: Citizen Of The Year
Kate Huston -- whose love and passion for Schroon Lake is contagious – is the 2012 Citizen Of The Year.
“I don’t think my feet have touched the floor since I learned about this honor on Tuesday,” Kate told Schroon Laker today.
“It’s an absolute honor. I do anything for this town, I love this town.”
Kate, who has served various Schroon Lake organizations in multiple roles over the course of a decade, was chosen by the Schroon Lake Chamber Of Commerce after receiving several nominations for this year’s award.
Asked why she has chosen to devote so much of her time to the various proejects she's involved in, Kate said:
"I don’t do this for the accolades or at-a-boys. When I see a need to do something, I step in and do it. I like to do things to help other people. The Lion’s Club is a perfect example of an organization that does that".
Kate’s work with the Schroon Lake Lions Club is one of more than a dozen organizations and committees she’s involved with.
Rosemarie Ritson, from the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce, says Kate has made Schroon Lake “a better place.”
“There is so much Kate is involved with. She’s always there to help.”
Among Kate’s accomplishments, as listed by the Chamber:
Kate is involved with the Senior Citizens Club as past president, the Board of Directors and van driver; former member of the Lions Club and Board member, Adirondack Marathon transportation chairperson and driver; Our Lady of Lourdes catholic church on the Parish Council, chair of the social committee and Bereavement committee and also a Lector & Eucharistic Minister; volunteers at the Tri-County nursing home; organized and chaired the Chamber of Commerce Old Tyme Christmas Celebration for 5 years as well as assisting with other activities; member of the Fish and Game Club and volunteers with their many activities including fishing derbies; chairperson of the July 4th Celebration for 3 years.
Kate said she started getting involved with volunteering and helping others when she and her husband John relocated here full time in 2002.
“When we moved up here we didn’t know a soul even though we’d had a camp here since 1988. So we joined the Senior Citizens Club and got involved with the Senior Center.
From there the couple joined the Chamber of Commerce (John is a past board member and President) the Lions Club and the couple got very involved in their church, Our Lady of Lourdes.
The community is invited to help Kate celebrate this tremendous achievement on June 19th, at a special dinner in the dining room of The Word Of Life. The evening will begin with s social hour with hors d'oeuvres from 6pm – 7 pm, followed by a dinner buffet. It’s $25 all inclusive and reservations can be made through the Chamber of Commerce at (518) 532-7675
