The Down to Earth Garden Club is a Schroon Lake Library children’s summer program. It started on May 26, 2012 and runs to Sept. 29, 2012.

The library garden is raised bed #14 at the Community Garden on Main Street.

The children and adults meet at the library for a 30 minute program which includes listening to a story from a library book and a lesson on gardening. Then they walk to the Community Garden.
They work, observe and have fun at the garden bed for another 30 minutes.

The children learn about preparing the soil, planting, the life cycle of plants, composting, the water cycle, pollination, and science related topics.

The program is a community effort. It has received contributions of a garden bag, tools. watering cans, gloves, kneeling pads, seeds, plants, mulch, compost and money.

Thanks to the library’s support and to Glens Falls Bank for the space and the water.
Thanks to Sharon Piper for her work at developing the Community Garden and to the Town of Schroon for their work and materials for the creation of the garden. The children are looking forward to the September harvest.
