Showing Off Your Restored Sled
We recently learned that folks who love their snowmobiles, really love their sport. And there are plenty of riders that fit that profile from the Schroon-North Hudson Snowmobile Club.
The sport goes back to the 1950s -- although there are prototypes from the early 1900s -- and there are many enthusiasts who have restored many an older 'mobile, who are quite proud of their efforts. Dwayne Anderson, President of the Schroon-North Hudson Snowmobile Club, hope many of those grand machines will be on display at the club's first show and swap meet. on Saturday (October 12).
"There are a lot of people who have restored old snowmobiles. And then there's a lot of folks who are looking for parts to restore their old sleds," Dwayne told Schroon Laker today.
And that's the genesis behind Saturday's show and swap meet. Sledding, as it's called, is extremely popular sport in our area, with a series of trials connectinmg multiple towns to Schroon. It's a big economic driver for local businesses in the cold months, with a few lucky taverns and pubs near and close to snow mobile trails. ( Which make great hiking paths in the summer!)
And that economic boost to the town is what Dwayne hopes for this weekend, and in future years.
"This is our first year and the club would like to grow it from here. When you bring people to our town they stay here, buy gas here and eat and drink here."
Saturday's event kicks off with coffee and donuts and registration from 7 am to 10am at the Town Garage on Hoffman. The club hopes to raise much needed funds selling 'dogs, hamburgers, chicken tenders and peppers and sausages.
Dwayne is hopeful that riders with old parts, paraphernalia, and riding gear will come out and strike a deal with those looking for similair items.
The show goes to about 4pm, when the winners of the Best In Show Awards will be handed out.
"We have three prizes and they will not be chosen by official judges, but by People's Choice." The Club will also be selling tickets for a new sled. Admission is free! Are you going?
