What's Behind This Fence Will Make Many Folks Happy
After a huge public outcry about the safety of the Town’s tennis courts we broke last year, players will soon have the use of four freshly resurfaced and painted courts.
While the large cracks have been filled in and the court’s surface looks good, experts consulted by the Town say this is just a temporary measure.
In a document obtained by Schroon Laker.com, two tennis court resurfacing firms told the town:
1). The courts have outlived their effective life.
2). Crack filling is buying time
3). Reconstruction is by far the only long term solution.
So for 2013 the Town contracted a Vermont based company to have the cracks filled on all courts, with courts 1 - 4 being resurfaced. That task was completed Thursday. Today the company will paint fresh lines on the courts.
The town has taken court 7 out of service -- installing a 2 sided practice backboard in its place.
The courts are a big draw, with players from surrounding towns using them free of charge. Throughout the summer the Town runs a Youth tennis program and space is used throughout the year by the Schroon Lake Central School.
Council member Roger Friedman said the Town is now actively seeking grants from New York’s Consolidated Funding Applications. To help in that effort, the town is seeking letters of support from players who use the courts. Send your letters to Supervisor Mike Marnell, PO Box 578, 15 Leland Ave, Schroon Lake, NY 12870.
