The Passing of Two Schroon Lakers: Donald J. Sharlan and Clara M. Swan Connell

More from the Post Star: Don was a member of the town of Schroon Lions Club and a recipient of two distinguished service awards from the International Lions Club.

He was a life member and vice commander of the Schroon Lake VFW Post No. 362 and commander of the Schroon Lake American Legion Post No. 982.

He had been a life member of the New York State Maritime College Alumni Association and a member of the Military Officers Association of America.

He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.

He served as an assessor for the town of Schroon for 13 years, a volunteer for the Road to Recovery Program, a committee member for establishing the Veterans Memorial in the Schroon Lake Park and a committee member for the Essex County Veterans Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine of Schroon Lake; a daughter, Barbara of Queensbury; and a sister, Joyce of Malone.

He was predeceased by a brother, Henry of Massena; and a daughter, Pamela of New York City.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at noon Monday, Feb. 9, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Schroon Lake, by the Rev. Kevin McEwan, pastor.

Interment will be in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in the spring.

The family suggests memorials take the form of donations to The Schroon Lake Veterans Memorial Fund or the Schroon Lake Emergency Squad, Schroon Lake, NY 12870.

Clara M. Swan Connell

From the Post-Star: Clara was born November 7, 1919, in Schroon Lake and was the daughter of the late Harold and Mabel Robinson Swan.

She grew up on Leland Hotel Emerson Farm on Hoffman Road. She graduated from Schroon Lake Central School and attended Hunter College.

Clara worked at Cornell University for more than 20 years as alumni affairs representative to the vice president. She considered herself fortunate to travel to Asia and Europe on behalf of the university. She found great satisfaction in diligently planning the alumni and university functions.

Clara was an Our Lady of Lourdes parishioner and an avid golfer, quilter, oil painter and gardener. She especially enjoyed Adirondack evenings sitting on her porch with her friends and faithful Labrador retriever.

Clara is survived by her son, Christopher (Susan) Connell; her daughter-in-law, Margaret; her sister, Rita Robinson Hooley; her granddaughter, Kimberly (William) Black; her great-granddaughters, Kaitlin and Meghan; and several nieces and nephews.

Clara was predeceased by her son, James Connell; and her brothers, Robert and John Swan.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at Edward L. Kelly Funeral Home, 1019 Route 9, Schroon Lake.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Saturday, February. 7 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Schroon Lake. The Rev. Kevin McEwan officiated.

Interment will take place in Warrensburg Cemetery at a date and time to be announced in the spring.
