Keeping Fit In Schroon and Beyond
The trailblazer for introducing organized fitness to Schroon is the one and only Deb Philp, who took a huge gamble -- and at the same time fulfilled a dream -- by opening True North Yoga.
From humble beginnings in the Community Church basement, to her landmark, gorgeous Zen palace on Main Street, Deb introduced many to the joys of Hatha, Vinyasa, Restorative and chair yoga.
But there’s more, Deb keeps busy hosting multiple classes, training other yogis and hosting elaborate workshops. Check out her website for all of the details.
Joining Deb in her facility is The Schroon Lake Wellness Center, founded by Donna Mellan. Donna is a NYS Licensed Massage Therapist and Certified Usui Reiki Master. What’s your pleasure? Massage, Reiki, Shiatsu, Qi Gong… whatever, Donna’s gentle touch will re-balance you.
Check out Donna's website, here.
Zumba guru Cathy Peace has really energized Schroon with her year round classes. Cathy has shown all age groups the joys of working off those trips to the Stewart’s Ice Cream counter in a fun and supportive way.
This summer Cathy hosted two classes at the Schroon Lake Central School. Call 518-532-2833 for Cathy’s current schedule.
A year ago Wendy Ryan got Schroon spinning – big time, with the introduction of Spin Classes. Wendy will get your heart pumping as the sweat flies off as she takes you on a virtual ride around Schroon Lake. This high-energy workout is suitable for all levels. It all takes place in her lakeside studio, which boasts stunning views of the lake and mountains. Get the class schedule on her website, by clicking right here.
These activities of course compliment the great, outdoor sports like biking, hiking, walking and a variety of watersports.
Our friends at The Schroon Lake Marina will hook you up with any number of ways to keep fit and get a great work out on the water.
Craig Kennedy and crew rent also kayaks, canoes and can proudly boast they were the first local business to introduce Stand Up Paddle Boards (which they also sell). Craig swears by them and we’ve seen a ton of them on the lake this year.
(For kayaks our favorite drop in point is at the bridge on Route 74. The ride is picturesque, smooth and easy.)
The rentals are affordable and the service is outstanding. For a more active work out the marina rents speedboats for water-skiing and tubing. Check out their website, here.
For a relaxing work out look no further than the Circle B Ranch. They have an amazing variety of rides for all levels, and you are in expert hands at all times. Get all of the details here.
Schroon also boasts one sweet little nine-hole golf courses. Enjoy this perfectly groomed, well known Adirondack Golf Course with stunning views. There’s free Wi-Fi at the Club House.
For some great hikes, check out this terrific guide, courtesy of our friends at Adiirondack.net, which you can access by checking out our Day Trips and Hikes section. There’s a guide for kids hikes, too.
