Sticks & Stones: "Soup 'Ta Nuts"

Calling all fall hunters, hikers, leaf peepers, fisher folks, bikers and locals (and you crazy boaters who just can't get off the lake -- despite the snow flurries!): just because the summer is over, doesn’t mean anyone is slowing down on being creative in the kitchens of Schroon.  And that especially applies to our friends over at Sticks and Stones, who are running two specials right now.

First off, owners Steve Holmes and Gary Tromblee are offering a Monday through Thursday Happy Hour at the Bar from 4pm to 7pm.

And there’s also their "Soup ta Nuts"! special: a soup sampler where you pick 3 soups. They also throw in some nuts too - hence the name "Soup ta Nuts"! And there's also their beer flight sampler (you pick 4 drafts!)

Speaking of beers, fans of  the Paradox Brewery -- who don’t live in or near Schroon -- now have the chance to get their growlers filled in  Queensbury, Saratoga, Wilton and Malta, thanks to the Minogues Beverage Company. Four Paradox brews are available at each location. This weekend the Paradox Tasting Room is open on Friday 4pm  -- "until you stop coming" -- Saturday 11am - 6pm and Sunday 12pm - 5pm

And Witherbee’s Carriage House is offering a $1 off your first drink tonight (October 31st) if you wear your Halloween Costume. Don’t forget tonight is Open Mic Night, hosted by Mark Piper.

And watch this space for some upcoming news on what's happening at Mr P's Smokehouse this Thanksgiving.

Cow Served by Lions?

Yes folks -- it's that time of the year again when the leaves turn color and the nights get a little chilly, when it's time for a big ol' juicy prime rib! And what better an occasion to sample a juicy and tender piece of meat, than at the Annual Schroon Lake Lions Prime Rib Dinner.

It's one of the club's tastiest fundraisers, served by actual Lions as your wait staff, at one of our favorite palaces of Red Meat: Witherbee's Carriage House. And did we mention it's one of the best deals around?

From Lion Patty Mehm:

Guests will be seated continually as tables arrive, beginning at 5:00 pm until approximately 8:00 pm.  The dinner includes salad, rolls and butter, prime rib, green beans, homemade mashed potatoes and a delicious dessert.

The Lions Club is a total service group, with 100% of all proceeds going back into our Schroon Lake community projects.  Please join us on October 19th, as we serve you and together we can help the community with all dinner proceeds supporting the Holiday food basket program, as well as providing scholarships to our local students and Lifelines to our elderly.

The communities support is greatly appreciated and necessary for its success, we hope to “Serve” many of our neighbors again this year.  The Lions Club motto is “We Serve” and the club members enjoy this opportunity once a year to do just that!

The donation for advanced ticket purchases is the same as last year, $20 or $22 at the door (gratuity included), Take-Out is available.  Tickets can be obtained from any Schroon Lake Lions Club member, at Friedman Realty and The Towne Store.  You can also call club secretary, Bette Manley, at 532-7577 for advance tickets.

And as we look forward to the really cold months, tickets for the Schroon Lake Lions Club Annual Ice Out event will also be available during the dinner. Think You know wheh the ice will go out next year?

Where and When: Witherbee's Carriage House,  Saturday, October 19th Route 9 in Schroon Lake.  Seatings begin at 5:00 pm until approximately 8:00 pm.

Got Fish?

The organizers of the Farm to Table Event of Love’s Labors Lost, a pre-show feast before next Saturday’s ADK performance at the Seagle Music Colony, are using Facebook to get the word out that they are in need of some ADK landlocked salmon.

From Chef Shelby Davis, via, Facebook:

“Hey all you local fishermen and women, I need to find some Adirondack salmon. At least 3 pounds but 5 pounds would be better. Will trade your local, wild caught salmon for barbecue or baked goods, or cash. Your salmon, after Mr. P's rub & smoke have been applied, could be featured at the Adirondack Shakespeare Company Farm to Table Reception & Love's Labour's Lost performance next Saturday at Seagle Music Colony. My deadline is next Friday...Any suggestions?

What could make a fall, weekend evening in the ‘Dacks any better than just being here? How about a performance from our favorite group of thespians, paired with some fine food and drink. It’s the Farm to Table reception, which will proceed the ADK Shakes’ performance of Love's, Labour's Lost, that has got our taste buds a tingling.

Organizers of the nosh up, on Saturday October 12 – Chef Shelby Davis and Schroon B&B co-owner Sharon Piper, have been doggedly rounding up local producers, food artisans, restaurateurs (who use local ingredients)  and farmers, who will provide a smorgasbord of festive food and drink at the reception.

We  are happy to share with you a partial list of contributors: Mr. P’s Mountain Smokehouse and Shelby’s own Kitchen Therapy will be providing tastes of the smoking barbecue and gluten free treats.

More from Shelby:

“Matthew Peterson is bringing some of his (eds note “legendary”) homemade Adirondack sourdough bread, Domaine Champlain Orchards in Westport is donating fresh apples. (Not sure what we are going to do with them yet, might serve sliced or if I have time, I'll make them into something),  also something from Sugarbush Farm is in the works, Paradox Brewery will be supplying some ales and Spa City Farmers Market will be donating a case of wine too.”

And local restaurants and farmers – it’s not too late to contribute – anything you’ve got will be appreciated. It’s a fine chance to showcase your business a taste of your fine menu items – so everyone benefits. So give Shelby a call on (518) 932-1241.
