Southwoods Kids Camp Looking North

Southwoods Camp – which has graced Paradox Lake under different names over its glorious history – has just been honored as one of the top 50 summer camps in the US.

In 1914 the lakeside property was known as Camp Woodmere, a retreat for girls, where for decades locals worked summer jobs year after year.

The honor was bestowed on the Camp by the Top Education Degrees website, ranking it at 22 out of 50 camps.

From Top Education Degrees:

The 25 cabins of Southwoods camp in upstate New York are situated by beautiful Paradox Lake, surrounded by the mighty Adirondack Mountains. The camp features a golf green and range, a nature center, a climbing wall, basketball courts, and a hockey rink, among other facilities. The four-week kids’ getaway – which is certified by the ACA – describes its camp experience as a safe environment in which children can “explore and grow.” Activities include a wide variety of land and water sports, artistic pursuits, outdoor adventures, and nature- and community-focused programs. Southwoods’ origins date back to 1914, when the property became Camp Woodmere, a retreat for girls. However, it now also includes boys in the camp and accommodates 250 kids per session. Website Lantern Camps describes it as “one of the country’s premier four-week programs” and references its “beautifully maintained cabins and activity facilities” as well as its “scenic grounds.”

Looking For A Few Good Zombies

Zombies, ghosts, ghouls and goblins -- it's time to come out of hiding and present yourselves to scare up some some good old fashioned screams this Staurday night, in Severance.

It’s the annual Grey's Annual Halloween Haunted Trail. Hosted by Tina M Bowers PlumsteadVickye Grey and Jessica Grey.  The organizers are also looking for some behind the scenes volunteers.

From Tina:

"Come join us for another night of screams, laughs, bonfire, goodies and more! FREE fun for all ages.

Enjoy a guided haunted trail tour through the woods starting at dusk. New this year for ages 1-10, costume judging, games and activities from 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM. ALL children 16 and under MUST be accompanied by an adult (meaning please do not just drop your children off and leave). Please help fill goodie bags that the children will be able to take with them upon leaving by bringing a bag of candy to share.

Want to help in other ways? Donations and volunteers are always appreciated. If you would like to be part of the haunted trail, we are always looking for volunteers to be zombies and other "characters", along with tour guides. Click here for more information.

PLEASE CALL VICKYE at 532-0588 to see other ways you can help. Her and her family have already starting setting up the trail and are in need of volunteers to help ASAP!!"

Where and When: 604 Route 74, Severance, NY. Saturday, October 12, 2013.  The frights and fun begin at 5 pm sharp.

A happy group of cousins on Schroon  Lake Fishing: there's nothing better.

Our friend, avid fisherman and fellow blogger Joe Steiniger, is looking for followers for his new Facebook Page.

Joe and Mary McDonald are the driving forces behind a fabulous Schroon Lake tradition: the Annual Kids Fishing Derby, sponsored by the Schroon Lake Fish and Game Club and the Town of Schroon.

From Joe:

Hey Schroon Lakers! The SL Kids Fishing Derby Facebook Page is just a few "followers" short of getting on Facebook's radar for public promotion. If you could stop by and "Like" the page (if you haven't already), it would be much appreciated. It will help visitors find out about the Derby on Facebook.

God luck Joe and Mary!
