From The Strand’s Larry McNamara:

"Since 1970 violist Louise Schulman has been widely recognized as one of New York’s most dedicated, versatile and gifted instrumentalists.  She is a founding member (1974) and principal viola of the St. Lukes Chamber Ensemble and Orchestra of St. Lukes, performing in virtually all of the group’s acclaimed concerts and recordings.

Ms. Schulman also has a major affinity for early music, performing on a variety of stringed instruments including baroque viola and violin, Vielle, cittern, viola d’amore and viols.

Some of the groups she has performed and recorded with include the Waverly Consort, Philomel, Long Island Baroque Ensemble, Folger Consort, Breve, Clarion Concerts, New England Bach Festival, Ensemble for Early Music, and the Alba Consort and Bacchinalia.

Her solo recordings of Telemann and Vivaldi concerti (Music Masters and Essay labels) have won much praise from critics. In the field of contemporary music Ms. Schulman has also made her mark.  Since 1975 she has been on the performing and coaching staff of the Composers Conference, performing and recording numerous chamber works of gifted young composers, and is now the staff representative on the conference board of directors.  Her recording of “Interviews” for viola and piano by Eleanor Cory is on CRI records. Ms. Schulman gives frequent duo recitals with guitarist Bill Zito.  Their CD “An Italian in Vienna,” duos by Mauro Giuliani (1781-1829) is a world-wide release on the Dorian Sono Luminus label.  Ms. Schulman also gives frequent solo recitals with piano, and concerto appearances.  She also performs with the Strathmere Ensemble and Armstrong Chamber Concerts.

Bill Zito

BILL ZITO, a native New Yorker, began studying guitar at the age of twelve. He studied early music with Rodrigo DeZayas, guitar with Stan Solow and Rey de la Torre, and composition with Julian Orbon. His formal debut came in Alice Tully Hall where he received critical acclaim. Soon after, he was chosen by Hi Fidelity Magazine as one of the Young Artists of the year. Mr. Zito was an Artist International Competition prize winner.

Called “First rate throughout the entire afternoon” by the N.Y. Times, Mr. Zito has received praise for both his solo and ensemble work. He has toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe. This versatile performer is equally at home on lute as he is on the guitar. On one evening with Philharmonia Virtuoso he performed back-to-back concerto’s on mandolin, lute, and guitar. Mr. Zito is no stranger to working with voice. He has performed and toured with Orpheus and Andreas Scholl and Carnegie Hall with St. Luke’s Orchestra with David Daniels and Roger Norrington. In a memorial concert for Peter Pears, the NY Times said, “One admired (his) easy assurance with this music, the runs and flourishes dispatched with fluent virtuosity”.

Along with opera and dance scores and music for the stage, he has premiered many new works. He is currently a member of the Strathmere Ensemble and Long Island Baroque and has performed with Philharmonia Virtuosi, the Da-Capo Chamber Players, Orpheus, St. Lukes and the New England Bach Festival at Marlboro. Mr. Zito’s most recent recording, the music of Judith Shatin is titled Dream Tigers.

Mr. Zito is currently on the faculty of Nassau Community College, Adelphi University, Hofstra University, and Queens College.

Beartracks in Schroon: Tuesday, August 19

From The Schroon Lake Arts Council:

"Beartracks" began as a trio in 2004. Legendary Dobro player Junior Barber convinced his cousins, Tom and Julie, to make the switch from playing traditional country music in clubs to playing bluegrass oriented material at festivals around the Northeast. The main focus of the group was the sibling vocal harmony of Tom and Julie and Junior’s unique stylist approach to playing resonator guitar. Although not a traditionally structured bluegrass group, the trio gained acceptance and a solid fan base at festivals throughout the Eastern US and in Canada from Calgary to PEI. Scott Hopkins, an experienced bluegrass musician, joined the group in the summer of 2012, bringing a driving banjo style and, at times, adding a third part harmony to the group. The addition of the banjo brought a much more traditional bluegrass sound to Beartracks, although you will still hear some Hank and Merle in their sets. When Junior decided to retire in June of 2013, they searched far and wide for a musician that would fit with the group both on a personal and professional level. Finally, in late July 2013, the perfect fourth bear was located at a festival in Danby, VT. Harry Ralph, an extraordinary fiddle player and a great person, decided to accept the offer to become a permanent member of Beartracks. It is evident to all who see Beartracks perform that the members of Beartracks love the music, each other and the fans.

Beer and Shakespeare: Homer Simpson Would be Proud

IMG_9471 2.JPG

From the ADK Artistic Director, Tara Bradway, on how beer and Shakespeare are a perfect match:

"So Paradox Brewery is partnering with us and providing beer for tastings at our Scaroon Manor performances. And in The Tempest, there is a drunken butler character named Stephano -- when he lands ashore the magical island, he manages to save some precious liquor and proceeds to imbibe happily throughout the show.

So in the midst of our rehearsal process as we try to gather props for the show, we were faced with needing a bottle for the drunken Stephano, and we thought that we could do some fun, great product placement with the Paradox growler!

In this particular picture … Ariel is invisible to the other characters in the scene (he is an airy spirit of the aisle), and I noticed that Stephano had left his bottle sitting so I decided to pick it up and "levitate" it -- a little inspiration! Took a while for them to actually notice it, which was quite funny!

ADK Shake next perform at Scaroon Manor on August 19, for what will be an epic performance which you, the audience, will decide the play they perform! Seriously. Click here for ticket information.

From Patrick Siler:

“For the first time ever, it's already more ambitious than anything we've ever done, but we're trying something that we've always wanted to do and just decided to go for it. On Tuesday, August 19th, at Scaroon Manor Amphitheater, we will begin a half an hour earlier than usual.

“We usually have a 5:00 call in the amphitheater. We'll have a 4:30 curtain because the first thing we're going to do is poll the audience and let the audience choose which play we're going to do that day. We won't know until the audience says, "We want to see ..." and I guess we'll have to go by cheering or I don't know exactly how we're going to do it. But we're doing audience choice where the audience picks the show and then the cast just has to jump right into it.

How nerve-racking is that?

“For me, I have a strange mind. For me, this is not nerve-racking at all. That's the most exciting thing that I could do is show up and be like, "Tell me what play to do for you." I know that, for some of our actors, they like to have a good afternoon ahead of the show to get in the right head space and maybe run through all of theirs. I like to walk the tightrope personally. I'm looking for the most nerve-racking situation to put myself into, which is why I started a company that behaves this way. The energy will be high on audience choice night, I am certain”.
