Keeping Our Lakes in Tip Top Shape

In a few short weeks our lakes will be alive with all sorts of activity – among them a flotilla of boats. And by the warmer months of summer, there will be hundreds of watercraft on Schroon and Paradox Lake. And that means hundreds of potential ways that invasive species may make their way into our waterways

But thanks to the efforts of our area’s three lake associations, our lakes – for the time being – is in tip top shape.

A large part if that cab be traced to the efforts of the Lake Stewarts program – where boats and trailers are inspected before they hit the water. And the Schroon Lake Association has openings for stewards – an ideal job for seniors in high school and college students.

Schroon Lake Gets Top Honors Again In “Best of the ‘Dacks!”

Three Schroon Lake treasures – a well-known B&B, a microbrewery and a world-class opera and theatre group, scored in the June edition of Adirondack Life Magazine’s “Best of The Adirondacks” readers’ poll.

Schroon’s Paradox Brewery was the runner-up in the Microbrewery category, also for the second year in a row. (The winner was the Lake Placid Pub and Brewery).

Adirondack Life Mag captures the experience a guest might experience at the Tumble Inn: “This beaming yellow landmark charms guests with its wrap around porch and homey vibe. And the food doesn’t hurt either – heaping breakfasts with locally sourced produce and meats from Oscars Smokehouse in Warrensburg.”

From owner Nancy B: "I just want to thank all of you who voted for us, the Tumble Inn. We are honored to have won the title of Best B and B as voted by the readers of Adirondack Life Magazine for the second consecutive year. If you haven't stayed with us and are considering a visit to the Adirondacks check us out at tumbleinn.net.

It seems fitting the Seagle Music Colony – celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, won as top music venue.

One this Easter Sunday, we celebrate new beginnings and fresh starts. So we think it appropriate to tell you about the tremendous efforts of local Donna Moses, of North Hudson and The Fresh Air Fund.

Donna was recently appointed as the new volunteer leader of the for the High Peaks, New York region for fund, which has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877.

Donna and her family began hosting New York City children in 2001. Please join her in making The Fresh Air Fund’s 139th summer memorable for even more New York City children!

“I took on this role because I wanted to see more children and families in our area experience and share in the fun times my family has had participating in The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program. It really didn't take long for me to decide that I would love to be part of helping more people make some wonderful memories that would last a lifetime,” says Donna.

And Donna is reaching out to other families in the area, hoping, they may too, be able to participate in this life changing experience.

Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from six to 18 years old, who live in New York City. Children on first-time visits are six to 12 years old and stay for one or two weeks. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. Over 65 percent of all children are reinvited to stay with their host families, year after year.

For more information on hosting a Fresh Air child next summer, call Donna at 518-532-0381 or visit The Fresh Air Fund online at www.freshair.org.
