Schroon Laker Star of The Derby

Avid readers know we’ve been following the career of a famous son of Schroon Lake, Travis Stone, the former Louisiana Downs track announcer.

The 31-year-old will make his Run for the Roses debut at today’s Kentucky Derby. We wish Travis all the best. From The Shreveport Times:

"Being a racing fan, from when I was in diapers to today, this is by far the most excited I've been for horse racing," Stone said. "Not only to be at the Derby, it's my first, but to be a part of it, to be calling it -- not to sound cliché, but it is dream-come-true stuff."

There’s a viewing party an Witherbee’s Carriage House at 4pm, with a best hat contest and Sticks and Stones, Flanagan's and The Timberwolf, will also be showing the big race.

Northern Pike Season Opens Today!

Pat Thorne reminds us the Northern Pike season opens  Saturday May 2, 2015.

From Pat: " These fisherman were lucky to catch a very big Northern Pike on Schroon Lake.  Northern Pike are known for their big fight and are sport fisherman's favorite.  They are tasty as well.  According to DEC web site, their common name is the "wolverine" of fish.  They have a voracious appetite and are known to eat frogs, ducks, and their own off spring.  Good Luck to all the fisherman!"
Once again, thanks Pat! Share your photos with us via email at schroonlaker@me.com.
