For folks in the northern part of Schroon Lake – the monsoon like rains have claimed our beaches – and many property owners can barely can make out their docks -- under several feet of water.
For those south along Schroon River – in Warren County -- the situation is more dire for property owners in Chester and Horicon.
Large parcels of their land are unusable. Several campgrounds have lost valuable income producing sites, not to mention damage to their wells and loss of property that has floated down river.
For those wondering if the dam at Starbuckville is open, the answer is “YES”, says East Shore Schroon Lake President Jane Smith.
“It’s open and being monitored. People on the lake want it open. People south of the lake want it closed. There is a lot of finger pointing right now,” Jane told Schroon Laker today.
So important is this issue, ESSLA has taken the first steps to form a committee to find solutions. “It’s not about controlling the dam, it’s about looking at the lake level as a whole. This is a subject that bares out searching for solutions.
"We want to involve the DEC and have representation from all parties who use the river and lake.
(Jane has been talking with Roger Friedman, from the Schroon Lake Association). ESSLA’s Rich Nawrot will chair it.
“The reality is that we’ve had a wet spring and summer, with non stop pop up showers happening on a regular basis. No one has control over that, but if there’s a way to help all parties, we’ll try and find it.”
