The Big Bang Theory: Big Bucks Needed To Make It Happen!

The Town of Schroon is looking for donations for their annual Labor Day Street Party and Fireworks Display. If you love this celebration – the unofficial end to the season – then you are being asked to participate in the Schroon Lake Challenge!

This year money was not allocated by the Town for fireworks, so the Schroon Lake Chamber is heading up efforts to raise a total of $4,000 for the event.

We hear Stewarts Shops has already donated a mighty $1,000. The Schroon Lake Chamber (thanks to Donna Mellan Rice's 4th of July chair massages) has donated $100; but the rest is up to all of the Schroon Lake lovers out there.

From the organizers: “Please contribute by making checks payable to the Town of Schroon - Please state for FIREWORKS! Bring your checks to the Town Hall (Patty Savarie, Chris Stone, or Mike Marnell) or the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce on Main Street. We thank you in advance for your generosity, and ask that you share this post with all your friends and neighbors”.

So 2, 4, 6, 8, dig in, don't wait!

Throwback Thursday: Rare Film of Schroon in the 1960s

For throwback Thursday, we are going back into our own archives, from a post we did a couple of years back. For your viewing pleasure: Adirondack Holiday,  a Kenneth Rickter Production, filmed in the 1960s.

This is an amazing piece of North Country and Essex County history, forever immortalized in this black and white travel film. "It reminds me of Switzerland" is a line from the film's narrator, describing the view from White Face. And he uses the same line again, to describe our beloved Schroon Lake, at approximately 6 minutes and 52 seconds into the film. "One of the most beautiful that dot the Adirondack Landscape (he says referring to the lake). He continues: “...a handsome park, everything neatly planned, so our young friends here can concentrate on having a good time. The town has provided a public bathhouse where you can change for sunbathing on the municipal beach or swimming in the lake"

There are scenes of the town fountain, the park, the beach and a nice sequence featuring two water skiers shot in front of what appears to be the Word Of Life Dock. Recognize anyone in this film? Let us know. Enjoy!

Schroon Lake & Beyond: Profiles of our Neighbors

 JoAnne Piterniak

JoAnne Piterniak

Today we are proud to announce our new, revamped Profiles section, where you you’ll get to know and learn about the people who have a special connection to this area.

We have invited a number of folks to participate, and are still looking for more. If you’d like to participate, shoot us an email here. First up is JoAnne Piterniak, author of one of our most popular posts ever, The Insiders Guide to Saratoga Springs Horse Racing Season.  We first met on a Balloon Ride above Schroon. Thanks to JoAnne for being the first to jump in the water. She has an amazing story to tell. Read all about it in our Profiles section.

Mark Piper: More Music, More Toe Tappin'

You’ll soon be seeing a lot more of Schroon’s own music man Mark Piper. Mark is heading up a new group, “Marking Time”.  Congrats, Mark!

From Mark:

We can be a duo, trio or quartet, acoustic or electric, depending on size of venue and customer needs. I’, on vox and Guitar, Blair Sutherland harmony vox and upright and electric basses, Mike Suftin on Cajon or other percussion. We will at times bring in special guests to round out our sound and be a quartet.

We perform a mix of Rockabilly, Western Swing and Tasty Originals that’s sure to get you out of your chair. We call it “Toe Tappin' Music”.

And they have a busy schedule, including a gig (as a trio) this Saturday (August 22) at the Paradox Brewery from 1 pm – 5 pm, Witherbee’s Carriage House on September 5th (as a quartet) from 7 pm – 10 pm and (as a duo) at the Essex County Suicide Prevention Awareness Day(Tuesday, September 8) from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. They'll be on the lawn at the Court House in Elizabethtown.

The lads also play in Saratoga Springs every other Sunday at Paddy Duggan’s. And of course he heads up Witherbee’s Open Electrified Open Mic Night every Thursday night. Sign-up is at 6:30pm upstairs in the loft.

Mark is on Facebook, or if you’d like to book a gig, contact him via email at mark.piper1@aol.com
