Conditions This Week In The High Peaks

Your weekend report from the DEC:

Weather forecasts and conditions can and do change quickly. Check current weather conditions and short-term forecast before entering the backcountry at the National Weather Service. Plan ahead - bring flashlight, first aid equipment, extra food, plenty of water and clothing. Always be prepared to spend an unplanned night in the woods.

Spring Conditions: Rain showers and chance of rain showers are forecast through the weekend with daytime temperatures in the mid-50s Saturday and the low 40s Sunday. Dress appropriately. SNOW AND ICE ARE STILL PRESENT IN THE HIGHEST ELEVATIONS.

Muddy Trail Advisory: Hikers are advised to avoid trail above 2,500 feet due to wet, muddy & snowy conditions to avoid further eroding trails and destroying sensitive vegetation. Please use trails at lower elevations during the spring mud season. The Muddy Trail Advisory press release has additional information and a list of alternate trails.

A Little Farm In Schroon With A Big Taste

IMG_2542 2.JPG

For a few years now, artist and photographer Anthony Ruizhas been toying with the idea of getting some land in Schroon and raising animals and crops for his family.

His goal was to provide healthy and natural foods,  knowing where it all came from.

While that remains a long-term goal for Anthony – better known as the owner of Schroon’s Giant Mountain Studio, he’s come up with a happy compromise. He’s now growing a variety of mouth watering microgreens, right here in Schroon.

Find out all about how you can get your hands – and give your taste buds a chance to enjoy these incredibly flavorful greens  -- in our Food and Drink section.

Be On the Lookout for Jupiter

Shelby James has been searching for her missing pooch Jupiter since mid-December. And just this week there have been sightings of a dog which matches the description of  Jupiter, around the intersection of Routes 9 and 74 in Schroon.

Jupiter has a very distinctive marking, which you can immediately identify him by:  a prominent white upside triangle on his chest.

From Shelby: "People in Schroon Lake my dog has been missing for about 5 months now and I thought I saw him on Saturday afternoon, then someone messaged me saying they may have seen him also. Please keep an eye out of if anyone knows anything please let me know. He's a German Shepard pit bull mix about 90 pounds when he ran off. My number is 518-524-5138
