Schroon Lake: Movie Capital of the Frozen North

Starting Saturday, (January 7) our hamlet becomes a movie mecca for the next few weeks, with two destinations to get your Hollywood fix.

Tomorrow, the Schroon Lake Library kicks off its annual Winter Movies On Saturdays, with the showing of Ice Age: Collision Course at 12:30 pm  and Wild Oats, at 7 pm. You can see the full schedule for January and February, by clicking here.

In addition, The Schroon Lake Central School is also getting into the (sister) act with a new Community Movie night, we hear from Principal Steven Gratto. From Mr. Gratto:

“The Schroon Lake Central School is planning Friday Night at the Movies to provide entertainment for residents during the winter months. Starting on January 13, the school will offer high-rated movies on its large screen in the auditorium.

The first screening will be Brooklyn, a movie that received three Oscar nominations including best picture. The complete schedule is as follows:

Brooklyn: January 13
Bridge of Spies: January 20
Social Network: January 27
The Intern: February 3

Movie nights are free of charge and families and adults are welcome. Children younger than 13 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

Friday Night at the Movies is an expansion of the school’s successful Continuing Education Program that provides residents the opportunity to use the school’s resources. For more information on movie nights please contact the school at 532-7164”.

Sharron Hozley Tyrrell captured this amazing scene on Friday at the north end of the lake of a Kite ice skater. This brave dare devil is a participant in a sport also known as para-skating or para ice skating.

Riders use a large controllable kite to zip across frozen rivers and lakes, where reaching high speed is the goal. What an amazing shot, Sharron.

Is It Safe To Fish On The Lake?

That’s the question asked by several readers in recent days. After a little digging. There are two answers. At the north end of the lake, the ice is 4-5 inches, according to Tammy Whitty-Brown, Executive Director of the Schroon Lake area Chamber of Commerce.

At the south end of the lake, which always takes longer to freeze over, there are miles of open water.

Back near town, there is photo evidence of folks on the ice, provided by Donna Rice Mellan, The Chamber President.  Donna says if you look closely at the above photo she took Thursday, she spotted four fisher folk out on the ice. (We've highlighted those dots!)

Up the hill on Bullet Pond, our special correspondent reports the ice at 10 inches.

Over at The Crossroads in Chesterfield, they have been selling a lot of sucker bait to anglers attempting to catch lake trout.

“We’ve also heard of some action at Brant Lake, Loon Lake, and other local bodies of water. Most places are reporting about 4-5 inches of good ice.”

Their live bait selection is the best, and they have everything for your ice fishing needs.

With today’s early morning temps around 10 degrees, the ice is bound to get thicker in all of our ponds and lakes.

Never assume anything when it comes to safe ice thicknesses. Always check in with a local, and use the below chart as a guide.
