Another beloved Schroon Laker has been called to heaven. William Dueno Stiehm, M.D. (Bill to friends and family) died Feb. 27, 2017 in Miami after a fierce battle with leukemia. A memorial service is planned for this summer in Schroon Lake. From Bill’s Official obit:
“Bill was born May 27, 1939 in Madison, Wisconsin to Reuben and Marie (Dueno) Stiehm. He attended West High School and University of Wisconsin, Madison, and remained a lifelong Badger fan. He received his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, then went on to serve in the United States Navy in San Francisco, California; Pensacola, Florida; and San Diego, California; and as a flight surgeon aboard the U.S.S. John Hancock during the Vietnam War.
After leaving the Navy, Bill began his radiology career in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as a professor of radiology at the University of New Mexico, then moved to Poughkeepsie, where he was a partner in private practice at Hudson Valley Radiology, P.C., and Dutchess Radiology Associates, P.C., for 20 years until his semi-retirement in 1995. He then enjoyed locum tenens work, and later joined the faculty at University of Miami Sylvester Cancer Center.
Upon retirement, Bill divided his time between his beloved Rocky Mountains in Boulder, Colorado, and his beloved Adirondack Mountains in Schroon Lake; and later between Lighthouse Point, Florida and Schroon Lake.
Bill was preceded in death by his daughter, Kaija; and his sister, Elizabeth. He is survived by his wife, Susan (Erle); his daughters, Holly, Stephanie, and Susannah; his brother, Richard; his sister, Mary; and his eight grandchildren.
Bill was an avid golfer, skier, and sports enthusiast. He was a scholar of World War II and an exceptional handyman. He routinely finished the Sunday New York Times Crossword puzzle. He was a friend to all, beloved by his family, and is dearly missed but forever in our hearts.
A memorial service is planned for this summer in Schroon Lake. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering cancer research at MSKCC.org/giving. An exemplary man, and a life well lived".
