Schroon’s Spring Snow Event? What’s Your Prediction?

A reader alerted us to this just a moment ago: “11 inches of snow at Gore on Friday?”

Whoa – that sent us scrambling to the National Weather Service website where we learned there is snow coming our way, but not anywhere near 11 inches. But it’s only Wednesday and this is the Adirondacks.

But according to this google search, there is 11 inches in the forecast:

So here in Schroon  we will be seeing the white stuff start to fall Thursday night into Friday and through to Sunday.

I can hear both groans of despair, and joy (from skiers and snow plowers). What’s your best guess?

Coming Out To Help a Local

Folks are encouraged to come out and support Todd Bessey, son of Remy and Kim Bessey. Todd is in stage 4 renal failure and has to have daily dialysis as he and his family anxiously wait for a kidney transplant. Save the date: Saturday, April 29 -- at the Horicon Town Hall on State Route 8 in Brant Lake -- for a benefit spaghetti dinner and silent auction. The event runs from 1 pm to 5 pm. We wish Todd and his family all the best.

Schroon’s Ice Out: Cash In

The clock is ticking: when the ice will go out this year, in the Schroon Lake Lion’s Club’s 13th annual event?  And with the contest set to close on March 31st, get your best guesses in ASAP.

Tickets are available from any Schroon Lions member, at the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce, Flanagan’s Pub, and Friedman Realty or by calling 518-532-9022.

We recently got an up-close look at the Star Wars like robot -- a long lost cousin of R2D@2 perhaps?  – when there was still a good 15 plus inches of ice.

When a weight drops through the ice, the precise time of the event is wirelessly transmitted and recorded on dry land.

Tickets are $5 for six choices or $1 per single choice.  Prizes include 30 percent of tickets sales for first place, 15 percent for second place and 5 percent for third place. And it’s all for a good cause: 100 percent of the proceeds from this and other Lions fundraising events to support various community projects.

Watch this space for the winners!

Enjoying Your Schroon Spring?

Monday's first day of Spring in Schroon, could not have been lovelier. We were basking in almost 50 degree weather, the blue skies were surreal and it even appeared that mountain of snow outside the Town Hall was at least an inch lower than the day before. Dare we say there was the tiniest hint of summer in the air?

And if there was a sign needed, we surely had discovered it at the Dollar General, aka, The Schroon Lake Shopping Mall. On display at the end of  an aisle was the tantalizing allure of summer right there: this year's newly unveiled fashion forward flip flop display.

But lest we all get ahead of ourselves, here from the National Weather Service Tuesday afternoon, came this warning of an "arctic blast." From NOAA:

An arctic cold front will bring snow showers and localized snow squalls between 10 pm and 2 am tonight. Visibilities will briefly
drop to a half mile or less in spots. While accumulations will be minimal (a dusting to 2 inches), a rapid drop in temperature will
result in some icy spots on roadways. This may yield localized hazardous travel conditions overnight.

Stay warm kids, there's more snow on the way.
