RIP: Concetta “Connie” (Grosso) Tyska.

We have just learned of the passing of former Schroon Laker Concetta “Connie” (Grosso) Tyska. The Village News of Florida reports Concetta, , 68, of The Villages, Florida, formerly of Greenlawn and Schroon Lake, passed away on Saturday, June 24, 2017.

From The Village News:

“Connie was born April 23, 1949 in Astoria, Queens to the late Andrew and Frances Grosso. Connie graduated from Pelham Memorial High School in 1967. She then graduated from SUNY Farmingdale as a registered nurse. She retired in 2013 with many nursing accomplishments. Connie touched so many lives all over the world and was loved by many.

Connie is survived by her husband, the love of her life, Henry, her daughters, Stacey Tyska Johnson, Barbara Tyska Wersten and her husband, Paul, her grandchildren, Cameron, Madison and Alexander and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Dr. Daniel Grosso and her grandson, Ryan Wersten”.

A memorial service was held on Thursday, June 29, 2017 at the First Baptist Church of Leesburg. Donations may be made in her memory to the Ryan Wersten MIOP Foundation, PO Box 2002, Wilton, NY 12831 or curemiop.org.

Chickens and Cyclists: The Schroon Lake Connection

Schroon Lake will soon be welcoming around two hundred cyclists as part of Cycle Adirondacks 2017. This annual ride, which includes a stop in Schroon for the first time, encourages participants and folks in the towns on the ride, to contribute to a program that will benefit the community.

And the Schroon Lake Central School has an awesome project needing funding: A Farm to Table program for local students. Here’s more about the project from Adirondack Gives and the Schroon Lake Central School:

"The goal of this new agricultural program is to help students understand where their food comes from and how they can use the Earth to become self-sufficient and responsible consumers.

The centerpiece of our Farm to Table program will be the construction of a chicken coop, not far from our playground and the future camping site of Cycle Adirondacks.

Our new coop will be used as a study lab for raising and understanding livestock.  Along with the other facets of our Farm to Table program such the construction of raised garden beds and the implementation of a composting system, we hope to instill and teach a lifelong passion for gardening and farming, and responsible use of the land".

No Lie: Pinocchio Plays Schroon Thursday

A huge hat tip to The Schroon Lake Arts Council! The performers they bring to Schroon each summer are world class. And each year they proudly present a free children’s play.

This year it’s The Hampstead Stage Company’s production of "Pinocchio,” at the Boat House Theatre on Thursday, July 27 at 1pm.

Carlo Collodi's Pinocchio is the timeless tale of an Italian woodcarver, Geppetto, who carves a son out of a block of pine. Join the wooden marionette on his journey to become a real boy! Through many mischievous adventures, Pinocchio discovers that to be human is to be goodhearted and brave. Pinocchio is best suited for audiences ages five and up.

 

An important note: an adult must accompany all children. This ain’t no free babysitting service. The Fairbanks Family Trust sponsors the program.
