Organizers of this weekend's ADK Marathon have cancelled the marque event because of unseasonably hot weather and concerns for the safety of runners.
The decision was made Thursday after the organizing committee meet with the event's medical teams.
Sunday's forecast calls for a top of 89 degrees with high humidity.
There are other modifications to this weekends events. Read more from race director Joel Friedman:
FULL MARATHON : The full marathon is cancelled due to the high temperatures and humidity forecast. This decision was made after careful analysis in consultation with our medical team and race managers concerning the health risks to the marathon runners.
Marathon runners are invited to run the half marathon and will receive a marathon medal. Marathon runners may also defer their registration to next year. (Please note, those runner’s who opt to postpone their entry until the 2018 marathon will be required to pay a $25 deferral fee when registering for the 2018 race.) Again runners will be shuttled by bus from Schroon Lake Village starting at 7:45 am to the half marathon start in Adirondack.
HALF MARATHON :The half marathon will be held starting earlier in Adirondack at 9:10 am, and runners will be bused over from Schroon Lake starting at 7:45 am. The half marathon will follow the usual course back into Schroon Lake Village. The two-person and four-person relays will take place over the half marathon course, along with the half and at the same time.
SATURDAY EVENTS : Events on Saturday morning in Chestertown (5K and 10K) and the Kids Fun Run on Saturday in Schroon at 2 pm are still on.
We apologize for any inconvenience but believe the safety of our runners is the most important thing.
Our hearts are hurting today, like many of those in Schroon Lake and beyond, after learning of the passing of John Milsom. He was 73. John passed away Saturday morning at his residence in Schroon Lake. John was a well-known and well liked figure all over town. Many knew him through his church, others from the the Schroon Lake Fish and game club and his other volunteering activities.
But for us, he and Linda were our friends and neighbors. I will always remember John behind the wheel of his boat with a big grin on his face with his grandkids in tow. He was a man who loved the lake, loved his family and loved life. John was always there to lend a hand, loan tools -- and give advice on how to use them -- all with a big smile.
Our condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to Linda, Debbie, Robert, Amy, Nancy, and all of John's grandchildren, family and friends.
There will be a viewing on Tuesday September 19, 2017 from 3 pm to 6 pm at the Community Church in Schroon Lake.
The Funeral will be at 11 am on Wednesday September 20, 2017 at the Community Church.
