North Creek Tracks To Tahawus Off The Rails For Now

New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation has asked federal authorities to put a 90-day hold on its request to declare the 30-mile rail line from North Creek to the former Tahawus mine in the central Adirondacks abandoned, while talks have continued for the possible takeover by a new freight operator, according to a report by Michael Virtanen in the Adirondack Explorer.

In an application to the Surface Transportation Board filed Sept. 10, New York officials said the line had no active shippers and the owner had “no reasonable prospect for developing future freight service.”

That permits a federal finding of abandonment under the test of “public convenience and necessity,” the DEC said.

Come On Up To Schroon: Leaf Peeping is Peaking

Last Sunday on Schroon Lake

Last Sunday on Schroon Lake

Spotters in Schroon Lake expect our area to be at peak leaf peeping this weekend, with 80 percent color change and bright gold leaves. That’s the official word from the Daily Gazette, who checked in with spotters throughout the North Country.

This season’s peeping season is one of the best. And there’s a reason, reports the Gazette:

It appears that the speed of change from summer's green to fall splendor slowed down in many regions of the state over the past week, according to the report. As a result, peak to near-peak foliage conditions will be visible on the fringes of the Adirondacks, the Catskills and in the Capital Region this weekend.

Read more of their story here. And why not consider coming up for the weekend, and making Schroon Lake your basecamp. Need a room? Check in with the the Schroon Lake Place, right on the waterfront, with great views to Mt. Pharaoh. Or contact the Schroon Lake Region Chamber of Commerce.
