We are saddened to report the passing of Bob Borquist, also affectionately known as “Pretzel Bob” to the many folks who frequented the Paradox Brewery beer garden. Bob was a gifted and prolific wood worker, whose handy work can be found in and around the Brewery’s Tasting Room.

Paradox Brewery Founder Paul Mrocka has fond memories of Bob.

“He loved serving up our pretzels and talking. He was a character. A great guy who served his country who loved the brewery and everyone up here. We will miss him,” Paul said.

Bob and his wife Brenda, spent as much time as they could in the ‘Dacks. Our condolences go out to all of his loved ones.

Here is Bob’s official obit from the Poughkeepsie Journal:

Robert Francis Borquist, 86, a longtime resident of Staatsburg, NY died on March 31, 2020, peacefully at home. Born February 9, 1934 in Highland, he was the son of the late Edwin and Mildred Halstead Borquist. He attended Highland schools before entering the Navy.

Bob proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal. Mr. Borquist worked at IBM in Poughkeepsie for thirty-seven years until his retirement in 1991.

An avid cabinet maker and woodcarver, he was a founding member of the Hudson Valley Wood Carvers. Bob had hundreds of carvings. For many years, he enjoyed spending time at the summer house he built in the Adirondacks. He also enjoyed helping out his good friends at Paradox Brewery. Bob loved a good find and could often be seen shopping at the Dutchess County SPCA Thrift Shop in Hyde Park.

From Lisa & Edward:

Hi Friends and Neighbors!

I hope this weekly email finds you, family, and friends all healthy and enjoying some nourishing time at home!

We have been busy beavers here replenishing food and planning menus for this weekend's pre-orders. We even hustled to find you some new things this week (new items are in red text on availability list)!

As in past weeks, we are once again open Friday thru Sunday, 11am to 4 pm. We will take pre-orders via email (Pineconemercantile@verizon.net). Orders are prioritized in the order that they are received, regardless of pick-up date. We will also take phone orders (518-532-0220)... but are not always available to answer the phone... so email orders are ALWAYS preferred.

Once again this week, we are heightening safety measures even further to further ensure your safety as well as ours! So this week, NO CASH SALES; credit cards or checks only. Also, when you arrive for pick-up, we will have a pick-up table under our front awning. Knock on the door to let me know you are here, then I will put your pre-bagged order on the table for you to retrieve.

Thank you all so much for your continued support! We LOVE being able to provide this for you!!!!
