July 4th Fireworks Launch Site Up In The Air
The Lake's high water level -- responsible for numerous floods, delayed dock installations, a missing paddleboat and an overall late start to the summer season -- may impact the location of where this year's July 4th fireworks will be launched.
There may not be a large enough area, behind the Boathouse, the traditional launch site, to set off the fireworks, Town Supervisor Cathy Moses told Schroon Laker.
"Our back up plan is the boat launch area at Word Of Life, " Moses said. "We used that area a few years ago and it worked really well." A final decision will be made Friday.
The high water level has also delayed the installation of the remaining town docks and fishing pier. Moses hopes they'll be ready in time for the weekend. "We may have to install longer chains to keep them in place. We'll do what we have to do."
The fireworks will light up the sky at dusk, following the parade which starts at 6pm. Moses estimates around 20,000 people visit Schroon Lake over the July 4th weekend and expects around the same number this year.
"I get a little nervous around July 4th. I'm responsible for projects with $7 million budgets, and I don't get this nervous".
"Every town claims they have the best 4th of July celebration, but we really do." Final plans were reviewed last week at a meeting with Town officials, Parks Department workers, The New York State Police, the Essex County Sheriff and the DEC.
