Schroon Sled Dog Race Officially Off Course
The Sled Dog Challenge Weekend – scheduled to bring hundreds of people to Schroon Lake in February, has been cancelled.
Organizers said a lack of funding was one of the reasons the event will not be held, said one of the organizers, Roger Friedman.
“There were also a couple of legal issues. We are confident all of these can be resolved before next year’s event.”
“We are very disappointed that the event has to be cancelled.”
Details of the event were first presented to the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce in August by John Huston, who headed a committee of locals, who worked with the Pennsylvania Sled Dog Club, to bring the event to Schroon.
The Sled Dog Challenge, originally planned for the weekend of February 9th and 10th, would have given the local economy a huge boost. The staging area would have been the Town Golf Course with multiple events planned at area restaurants and the Schroon Lake Fish And Game Club.
The Chamber of Commerce had been working in close co-operation with town officials and private landowners, whose property would have been part of the race course.
“We are confident that this time next year we be the dog chasing its own tail,” Friedman said.
“We know what the growing pains are and we won’t have any issues in 2014”
