Just after sunrise today, visitor Patty Steele witnessed a remarkable event on Schroon Lake. Patty, here in Schroon for leaf peeping, snapped the above shot as the sun rose over the east side of the lake.

While not enjoying our wonderful fall activities, Patty  is better known for her role as the newsreader and co-host on New York’s WCBS’s Scott Shannon Morning Show.

No sooner had Patty snapped the above shot, something remarkable happened.

“I looked out and I saw this incredible white mass coming down from the north, down the lake, said Patty, who is staying one the west side of the lake, just north of The Narrows.

“I thought it was smoke from a fire. I was looking through the trees and then I asked myself, ‘Is that snow?”

Patty returned a few minutes later to snap more photos“Through this haze I could see speckles of sun on the water”. So large was this mass, that even the room Patty was got darker.

Patty thinks what she saw was possibly a low cloud.  The event lasted around ten minutes, before the mysterious fog/haze/low cloud disappeared. Locals -- what was this phenomenon?
