Reuben Mick: 1911 - 2014
/"SCHROON LAKE — Reuben C. Mick, a longtime resident of Schroon Lake, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at The Sarah Neuman Center in Mamaroneck, N.Y., with his loving daughters nearby.
Reuben was born Oct. 2, 1911, in Raquette Lake, N.Y., the son of the late Reuben M. and Julia Mick, the fifth of six children.
A graduate of Raquette Lake Central School, he graduated from Cortland State Teachers College in 1933 and earned his master’s degree in education from Columbia University in 1943. In his early career, he taught physical education in Long Lake and Brant Lake (Horican) and coached the men’s and women’s basketball and softball and baseball teams. Upon receiving his superintendent’s certificate in 1957, he assumed the principal positions in Wells, N.Y., and Pottersville and retired from North Warren Central School in 1975. As a result of being a teacher and an administrator in three school districts over the course of more than 40 years, he was frequently approached by adults (some fairly advanced in years themselves) who reminded him that they “had him in school.” After his retirement, Reuben worked for several summers at the Town of Schroon Golf Course.
In addition to his long career in education, Mr. Mick found time to play an active role in the community. He served terms on the town of Schroon Zoning Appeals Board and Essex County Democratic Committee and was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. He was also a member of town of Schroon Lions Club and was honored by them in 2001, for his more than 30 years of membership. As a native and lifelong resident of the Adirondacks, Reuben had a great love for the mountains, woods and lakes where enjoyed many years hunting and fishing.
Reuben was a devoted husband of 67 years to his wife, Jane Kelly Mick (1920 to 2009), and a loving father to his four daughters: Mary Mick of Larchmont, N.Y.; Diane Mick Feldman (Henry) of New York City; Cathie Mick (Lance Miller) of Leonia, N.J.; and Noel Mick Moschetta (Stephen) of Bronxville, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Lisa Toucey (Peter), William Mahar (Laura), Benjamin Miller and Julia Moschetta; and three great-grandchildren, Evan Toucey and Malin and Laird Mahar".
A funeral Mass was held on Saturday, February. 8, 2014, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Schroon Lake. Interment will take place in the Severance Cemetery in the spring.
Friends are asked to visit the Edward Kelley Funeral Home guest book to leave their memories and prayers for his family.
The family is suggesting memorials take the form of donations to the Schroon Lake Lions Club, P.O. Box 752, Schroon Lake, NY 12870.
