A Very Special “Gingerbread” Christmas Story
/In early December, the story of an abandoned dog at the shuttered Paradox General Store, was reported on extensively on the Schroon Lake Voice Facebook Page. The dog, now known as Ginger Noel, was in pretty bad shape. Locals left blankets and food. Then came along Alicia Moses and her family, who gave Ginger Noel her forever home. Many folks were involved in that effort, including Christy DeZalia and Doug Benson. We asked Alicia about Ginger’s adjustment to her new life and what’s next. Here’s the latest from Alicia.

“She is doing great and has gained four pounds. Her front paw that was caught in a trap is almost healed. She has just a few small scabs from that on the top and bottom of her paw. Her nose also had wounds, and all but two remain. One opens back up as she tries to hide bones and it reopens. But that is getting smaller. We noticed she has a scar on her neck that was from an imbedded collar or chain of some sort that was from a previous time. Not from the current situation.
She possibly had a local owner. They were questioned by state troopers and denied she was theirs. She was clearly someone’s pet. She is very trained. I just will never understand why you would spend so much time with a dog and train her as well as she has been, to be just abandoned. She is going Monday to a vet to be read to see if she has a chip. We plan to keep her. Unless someone comes forward and we can’t.
So, begins a happy ending to her sad story! I reached out to Doug Benson saying if she was caught I would take her in. The day he posted. I then reached out to my good friend Christy DeZalia. I said if you can get her I will take her. I was on my way to Albany for my son Tyler’s surgery when we got the call. Christy had coaxed her to letting her get near her. It took some time for this process. She kept her until we could pick her up that evening. While checking in to the Albany South Campus for his surgery, we told the staff their all about it. We were trying to come up with a name for her. I said well it’s Christmas maybe she should have a Christmas name. Tyler said let’s name her Ginger. Because of Gingerbread and she is kinda the color of ginger. So, she got the name Ginger. My friend Jodi Thompson suggest her middle name be Noel. So, her name is Ginger Noel.
She now has a human brother Tyler, 13, a sister who is a Chug named Belle, who will be two in spring who was also a rescue but in a different way. Then her parents: myself and my fiancé Larry Jordan. I thank my fiancé for helping with her too. She knows a lot but has a few behaviors. From fending on her own that we are working on her with. She also is owner obsessive, and don’t want you to share your attention. We have started to curb that behavior. I think with time both will be nonexistent. She is loved by my entire family and has already been accepted into our extended family. Spoiled completely by all. She deserves that not just from her last situation, but clearly, she has had a not so good past. We have had her 9 days and look how far she has come.
Oh yes, her Nick name is GD -- LOL! She is our own food garbage disposal. Just kidding but if you open fridge door. She could be sound asleep snoring and she will bolt right up and before you even have door open all the way she is like: ‘Hello. I want something too.”
Thank you Alicia for sharing your story and doing something so wonderful for this precious pooch.
