Drake's Is Back

Drake's Restaurant --- serving locals and summer people for more than 70 years --  is set for a Mother's Day re-opening, ending months of speculation about its future.

Restaurant veteran Carl DeSantis Jr., signed a 12 month lease on Sunday, promising to breathe new life into the Route 9 landmark.

"We will be ready for a Mother's Day opening, we'll close for a few days to review how things went, then be opening for the season on Friday, May 18," Carl told Schroon Laker.

"I want to return the restaurant to where it in once was. I've heard it had a rocky couple of years. I'm going to draw on my many years in the business to make this a success."

Spring Spruce Up Shutters Two Eateries

We are sad to report that Flanagan’s Pub and Witherbee’s Carriage House (pictured above) will be closed for their yearly Spring cleaning starting this week.

But the good news is that Flanagan’s will re-open this Thursday, April 12, and Witherbee’s will be ready for business on Thursday, April 19.

And mark your calendars for Saturday, April 21st, for the return to Witherbee’s of our favorite ADK country rockers, The In-laws, who will be sure to shake loose any dust particles that may have escaped the eagle eyes of Amanda and Patty.

Cajun Country In Schroon Lake

Crawfish-Boil.jpg

We can almost smell the crawfish boil from here! And that means it’s the annual Witherbee's Carriage House Bayou Bob Crawfish Boil, starting today and going through Saturday.

Bill and Patty have had thousands of pounds of crawfish flown in from Louisiana for this special event, which memorializes Louisiana native and long time Schroon  Lake resident Bobby Matchutas.

Bob taught Bill and Patty all of the secrets to a traditional Louisiana Crawfish Boil, including a dizzying array of spices and the precise timing required to achieve that authentic Cajun taste

Schroon  Laker Joe Steiniger has the terrific back story behind the Boil on his North  Country Rambler blog. It's a fun read.

For $12.95 you get a pound of crawfish, corn, potato and assorted veggies.

Tonight  there's Cajun music by 2 Guys DJ and The Adirondack Bluegrass Band performs on Saturday night.

A Yummy Favorite Returns

After a short winter hiatus, The Morningstar Bistro opens it's doors today at 10 am. Owner Myriam Friedman says during the break she was able to spruce up the restaurant, refinishing the floors and give it an early, deep Spring Cleaning.

"We enjoyed the break. It was the first time we'd taken some time off in the winter," Mryiam told Schroon Laker today. All of the restuarant's yummy crepes, soups and sandwhiches are back, and Myriam says she plans on expanding the menu with occassional specials this year.

One of the new items rolls out this week: a smoke salmon crepe, served with smoked salmon, cream cheese and capers.

'I got the inspiration when I had something similair. I liked it it, so I decidd to give it a try here.
