One of the amazing creations from the ADK Shakes featured during the 2015 Schroon Lake July 4th Parade.

Schroon’s own ADK Shakespeare Company is adding a new element to their children’s programming this year – and fans of the company are helping out in a big way.

Through their Adirondack Gives Campaign they have raised $2,410.00 out of their $3,000.00 goal  to help fund  an Arts & Crafts activity for their young audience members.

As of this writing there is 13 days to go. Get all of the info, by clicking right here.

Children ages six  and up will create their own Native American Wampum Belt; and kids under six will color, decorate, and construct a turtle to make their very own Turtle Island.

It’s an amazing idea. From Company Director Tara Bradway:

“Actors from the show will teach the kids about the tradition of wampum belts, give directions on stringing beads according to a simple design, and then assist the children in creating their own belt. Children under six  can, instead, create their very own Turtle Island. They will color the back of Turtle’s shell in crayon, and with the help of a parent, guardian, or one of our actors, they can use a glue stick to decorate Turtle’s shell with tissue paper squares and to attach Turtle’s tail, feet, and head from pre-cut pieces of construction paper”.

Your donation will help  purchase 3,000 purple and 5,000 white pony beads, and 3,000 pipe cleaners suitable for creating wampum belts for children ages 6 and up (enough for 500 Wampum Belts), support curriculum development: developing clear, age-appropriate instruction on the history of wampum; directions for stringing the belts; and worksheets for children to take home with more information on how to create their very own designs

What’s also needed  is 500 sheets of green construction paper, 500 paper plates, 5,000 tissue paper mini-squares, crayons, and glue sticks for our Turtle Island craft for children under 6 (enough for 500 Turtles)

ADK Shakes wants to bring in a Native Mohawk Storyteller for an hour to tell stories and a Mohawk craftsperson for a beading demonstration & workshop on Saturday, August 1 AND provide a free lunch for our young audience members!”

We gotta admit: Schroon is one lucky lake to boast THREE Kids Fishing Competitions. This weekend’s Val and Lorraine DeCesare Kids Fishing Contest joins the Schroon Lake Fish and Game Club’s Ice Fishing Derby and the Club’s Kids Fish Fishing Derby, coming up in July. The comp last year attracted 30 kids and raised $330 for the DeCesare scholarship fund, of which $250 was awarded to a Schroon Lake Central School Senior.

This weekend’s free event takes place at the Town Docks from 9 am to 12 noon (June 27, 2015) and is open to youngsters up to 15 years old.

Each participant  can expect a goodie bag and pizza lunch donated by DeCesare’s Pizzeria and an assortment of prizes donated by area businesses for winners in several categories. A bake sale will also be held.

The Adirondacks Real Life Time Machine

A must see and do -- on any vacation in the 'Dacks --  involves a trip to The Adirondack Museum. With its interactive displays and demonstrations, the museum focuses on the cultural history of the Adirondacks, set against the glorious Blue Mountain Lake. Kids of all ages can experience how folks lived, survived and  progressed in the Adirondacks, going back to the 1800s.

We recommend getting there early and packing snacks and a picnic lunch. All your  need to know details are right here!

Younger kids  will enjoy the antique clothes-washing station  -- with real clothes to wash and dry --  a lean-to with camp supplies to play in, a train to climb aboard, animal pelts to play “guess what” with, and a one-room schoolhouse full of crafts and games.Older kids can watch a boat builder making a traditional Adirondack boat, learn the history of logging, and tour an early Adirondack cottage.

Railroads on Parade: Back On Track

It looks like the goal to turn Pottersville’s Railroads on Parade into a non-profit and keeping it a local attraction, is back on track.

Owners Clarke and Barb Dunham report that they have raised enough in donations to keep two of their attractions, but need help in securing donations at a grass roots level to save the other two.

From the Dunhams: “WHO SAYS SILENCE IS GOLDEN? We've been so preoccupied with details that we've forgotten to let you all in on the current situation. We've currently raised enough money to secure both the Hell Gate and the Station exhibits, but not the Worlds' Fair or New York City Subways exhibits. We are appealing to our former partner for more time do do that, as there are more interested parties out there who would help secure the exhibits for the short term. That would leave us three months to raise the balance of the 2015 operations money and to complete the Not-for-Profit status. Even if you don't Pray; Pray for us! Your can send your donations here,  7903 State Route 9, Pottersville, NY, 12870  or call (518) 623-0100 for more information
