Splitting the duties of School Superintend from those of the Principal garnered comments and discussion at the recent school Board meeting of the Schroon Lake Central School, according to President Bob Claus.
That was one of the options laid out by interim superintendent, Jim Polunci, who gave a power presentation to about 40 parents at last Tuesday night’s meeting.
“Jim listed the three options that we're looking at, the first one being one person to fill both roles of superintendent and principal, which is the model we've had for about 20 years in the district. The second option is to hire a part time superintendent, who is a retired superintendent, and a full time principal. The third option is to share a part time superintendent with another district and have a full time principal,” Bob told Schroon Laker.
“He (Polunci) did a cost projection, using supposed figures because we obviously don't know what we're going to get into until we actually go on the market and hire. He pointed out which is the least expensive up to the most expensive. Then he listed I think it was eight pros and eight cons for each of the options. He was trying to cover the waterfront. He gave people a look at all the arguments for and against each option.
“The gist seemed to be most comments were in favor of the retired superintendent part time and the full time principal. (A cost savings of around $170,000 versus $207,000 if the school hired a full time superintendent).
