Beating Cabin Fever The Schroon Lake Way

The more time we get to know the folks that call Schroon Lake “home”, the more we are gobsmacked by the incredible pool of talent that reside here, both full and part time.

In this small upstate town, there are many with extraordinary skills, complimenting those who have had awesome careers, before beginning their second acts here.

And you will get the chance to meet some of these people in a just launched program, “Continuing Education”, proudly presented by the Schroon Lake Central School.

Starting this week the program, which runs through March, has an incredible array of courses that you can participate in to learn a new skill, hobby and improve your life.

The courses include: Basic Household Electricity, Woodworking, a Community Archery League,  a Community Chorus,  Learn Zumba, Martial Arts/Self Defense, a NYS Boating Safety Course and a Lecture Series, with guest speakers.

Phew!

The program is the brainchild of the Schroon Lake School Board, with the full backing of Superintendent Stephen Gratto.

Board member Sue Repko, one of the chief organizers, could hardly contain her excitement when Schroon Laker caught up with her recently.

“These programs are designed to bring the community together, utilizing the facilities of the Schroon Lake Central School,” Sue told us.

“It’s a way to use our school and some of its resources. And it’s a great way for the community to participate in activities that will enhance their lives.”

So without delay we suggest you head on over to our Winter Fun in the ‘Dacks 2016 section, to explore the full program, and start making your choices.

And be on the lookout for the date when I will be giving a presentation, about my three decade long career as a journalist, TV producer and one of my proudest achievements, being a Schroon Laker.

Pick up a registration form at the school, library, or Chamber. For more information call the school at (518) 532-7164.

Mt. Severance Country Store’s Future?

IMG_8380 2.JPG

For many folks, the shuttered Mt. Severance Store is a sad sight. On a recent day, old newspapers and tourism brochures flapped in the cool breeze. Firewood stacks sit outside the once buzzing hub, where locals, day trippers, holiday makers and second home owners got gas and amazing sub sandwiches.

As we reported in early December, the store abruptly closed Thanksgiving Week, a hand written “Closed For Good” sign stuck behind the glass on the store’s front door.

But there is potential news. Phil Otto, one of the store’s former owners, took to social media via the Facebook Schroon Lake fan page this week posting a missive about what may happen in the future.

“Dear Schroon Lake / North Hudson residents, so many of you have reached out to me and Rachel about the store, asking what is happening. All I can say is I don't know anything yet. The current owners have not returned my calls or emails. My attorney is on top of the matter.

I can tell you that if the store ends up back in my hands, and if I can come up with the money needed, it is my intention to bring Mt. Severance Country Store back to its former glory. I know how much this store means to the community and I am truly sorry that this has happened. Love to you all, Phil Otto.”

We wish Phil all the best. Got a memory of good times at the store? Share with us in comments.
