The Circus Is Coming To Town

The Cole All-Star Circus, heading to Schroon Lake Central School next week, has strong, historic ties to New York. The Big Shown was founded in 1938 by legendary showman James M. Cole, born and raised in Penn Yan, New York.

James was just 11 when he  began his show business career as a "program boy," passing out playbills at the Smith Opera House in Geneva, NY.  After graduating high school he joined the Walter L. Main Railroad Circus in 1924.  Throughout his amazing tenure in show business, he managed many major touring circuses, owned and operated his own big top show, toured the nation with his famous performing elephants, and became a circus legend. Fun fact:  The Cole All-Star Circus began as a school workshop project; Mr. Cole provided the acts, and the schools provided the rest: the art classes designed and crafted the posters, the band classes provided the music for the show, the gym classes served as stage hands.  The show became a popular tradition throughout New York State and Pennsylvania.  He retired in 1987, completing his 50th annual tour of the Cole All-Star Circus.

Enter Billy Martin, just 12 years old when he met Cole in 1972.  The indoor circus performed at his hometown school in Olean, NY.  His fascination with the circus evolved into a wonderful friendship with Cole, and at age 14, he began booking many schools for the circus throughout Western New York.  After graduating high school in 1977, it was only logical he join the Cole Circus.  He performed a juggling/balancing act, served as ringmaster, and became Mr. Cole's right hand man.  When Mr. Cole retired at the age of 80, Billy took over the show and remains at its helm today.

As regular readers know, we are faithful fans of the The Adirondack Shakespeare Company. The Schroon performing art scene got an incredible boost back in 2010 when a young company of talented actors  -- headed by Tara Bradway and Patrick Siler -- established the Adirondack Shakespeare Company right here.

From performing scenes in the Town Park, to breathing life into the long abandoned stage at Scaroon Manor, this little company that could, shook things up.

And along the way, they attracted a loyal fan base of kids and adults, with their unique approach to re-inventing the productions of Will Shakespeare, while maintaining their authenticity with their passionate performances.

Six years later, the company performs all over the North Country, has a summer season which stretches into the fall, and continues to feature  productions for all ages.  Now the company’s Tara Bradway has written a piece about the ADK Shakes, its history and its future, which you can read in our Music and Arts Scene Section.

Anglers To Swarm Schroon

In a little over a week, folks from all over the North Country -- and several states near and far -- will be descending on Schroon for our Annual Ice Fishing Derby!

If previous years are anything to go by, Main Street and Route 9 bars and restaurants will start getting busy as early as next Thursday night, in preparation for the big derby which kicks off at day break Saturday, March 5th until 4pm on the afternoon of the 6th.

That’s the deadline for all fish to be in and weighed at the Schroon Lake Fish and Game Club.

Registration for adults and kids is $15.00. You may pre-register at the Fish & Game Club on Friday, March 4 or Saturday March 5. You may also register on Friday, March 4 at the Fish & Game from noon to 9pm or at Flanagan’s starting at 4pm. For more info, call 518-532-7953.
