No Shirt, No Shoes, No Mask, No Service!

Schroon Laker Jill Reilly shares her experience on the frontlines in the restaurant business:

“Servers at restaurants and bars are following state mandates. Our policies are not OUR fault. Please don't try barging past us because you refuse to wear a mask to enter, not tip us because you don't like the state mandates (we make 7.80 per hour), or worse, scream at us! We are just doing our jobs. It is hard enough having to wear a mask our entire shift, make very little because we are only allowed half capacity, but being yelled at, belittled and demeaned several times a day is mentally exhausting. Please be kind and put yourself in our shoes”.

Schroon and Beyond Mid-Pandemic: More Businesses Open

THE NEW PAVILION AT PARADOX BREWERY IN NORTH HUDSON

THE NEW PAVILION AT PARADOX BREWERY IN NORTH HUDSON

Little by little, Schroon Lake mid-pandemic, is starting to look a lot like Schroon Lake pre-pandemic, just with masks and social distancing. Life on Main Street and beyond is semi-buzzing. Sweet tooth fans rejoiced last weekend with the opening of The Pit Stop Sweet Shop. And Vine and Barley, the casual wine bar and bistro, will open next Friday.

Folks are anxiously awaiting news on the openings of True North Yoga, Flanagan’s Pub,  Bark Eaters Outfitters and the beloved Strand Theater.  But the wait will soon be over for Flanagan’s Pub and Grill fans. From Penny and Doug:

“Just wanted to give everyone an update on our status of opening. We are shooting to open middle to end of next month. Due to the COVID 19 guidelines, we feel that we have already been closed 3 months, what's one more, if it means the safety of our patrons and employees. Hopefully by that point, things will get better and we all will feel a lot more comfortable about Dining out. We want to Thank you all for your continued support and look forward to seeing you all soon. Love all of you.”

Paradox Brewery expanded their hours to 5 days a week: Wednesday through Sunday from 12pm – 6pm. There is plenty of room at their new North Hudson digs featuring a large outside bar for pints, growler fills and can sales. A big white tent  and their deck off the tasting room are open. The Inside tasting room is closed. A huge pavilion is in the final stages of completion and will hopefully be ready for the large July 4th crowds.

A few miles up the road Tammy Whitty-Brown is racing against the clock to complete stage one of a multi-part renovation to be ready to welcome her first guests at the Blue Ridge Motel. We’ll be profiling Tammy’s new venture next week.

Check back here for updates or share your news about your business in our comments section.  Meanwhile Bark Eaters Apparel merchandise is available online and True North Yoga are holding workshops, classes and events virtually. One of the reasons the Strand has a delayed opening is the lack of new movies.

Mountainside Share Shop Opens Saturday

IMG_20200625_170453.jpeg

The Mountainside Share Shop is officially opening back up on Saturday, we hear from Rännei  Rambow. More from Rännei about what the Share Shop is all about and the important role it plays helping folks in our local communities:

“It's a major community outreach, which is why we do our best to keep the price so low! So many people refer to the Share Shop as a thrift store, but that is not what it is. We accept donations of clothing, shoes, accessories, and linens and once we've sorted through the donated items, we fill the racks in the shop, and instead of charging per item, we charge $3 per a bag. We use what’s called a T-shirt bag. They are bigger than a Walmart bag, but smaller than a standard 13 gallon trash bag. So, it fits quite a bit of stuff. We have people that come from all over: Ticonderoga, Hague, North Hudson, Pottersville, Chesterton, Warrensburg... And I'm sure from many other places as well. Please help us spread the word! Looking forward to seeing you all! We have missed you!”

Location: 147 U.S. 9, Schroon Lake, NY
Just off of I-87, Exit 27, Northbound.

How Would You Attract New Residents to the Adirondacks?

Screen Shot 2020-06-25 at 12.20.08 PM.png

Vital to the economic growth and stability of the Adirondack’s long term viability is increasing the area’s population. That topic is one of many to be covered at the 14th annual Adirondack Common Ground Alliance Forum.

The organizers have announced this year’s theme:  Attracting a New Generation of Residents to the Adirondacks.

More from The Common Ground Alliance:

This comes as people all over the world are learning they can work from basically anywhere. Which raises the worthwhile and timely question: Why not the Adirondacks?

Adirondack communities face a serious demographic challenge, specifically related to the attraction and retention of new, younger residents. This year’s forum will explore and work through the issue, with a special focus on community vitality.

"This year's virtual forum is designed to replicate the energy and camaraderie that happens when we meet in person. With a shorter over all time commitment and easy digital access, we're looking forward to engaging an even wider range of people from across the Adirondacks in discussions about reenergizing our communities," said Cali Brooks, Adirondack Foundation President and CEO and CGA Core Team Member.

The event will take place on July 14-15, conducted in one-and-a-half to three-hour sessions via video conference each morning. A one hour closing session will also be hosted on Thursday, July 23 to report the Forum findings.  Registration is now open at commongroundadk.org, the new Common Ground Alliance (CGA) website.
