George Egan: 1924 - 2013

George J. Egan Jr., 89, who contributed so much to making the quality of life for those who live and visit Schroon Lake so much better, passed away Thursday, December. 12, 2013, at the Moses Ludington Nursing Home in Ticonderoga.

"George was born July 16, 1924, in Port Henry, N.Y., the son of the late George J. Egan and Pauline Lane Egan.

George was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Jean Rabatoy Egan, on Sept. 9, 1997.

George attended Port Henry High School, and when World War II was forced upon the United States, George joined the U.S. Navy in 1942. He served four years and was honorably discharged in 1946.

George was employed as a foreman for Niagara Mohawk Power Corp., retiring after 38 1/2 years of service. After retirement, George worked with Jean in her business, Jean Egan Originals, manufacturing Christmas ornaments.

George was a communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and a former member of Schroon Lake Volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Squad. He was a former member of Schroon Lake Youth Commission, a founder of Schroon Lake’s Little League program and was a big help during the construction of the field at the Fish and Game Club.

George enjoyed ice fishing and, in his younger years, liked to hunt.

George is survived by his sons, Gary (Roxane) Egan and George J. (Mary) Egan III, all of Schroon Lake; his grandson, George J. Egan IV of South Ogden, Utah; and his sister, Jane (Patrick) Salerno of Port Henry; as well as six nieces and four nephews.

The family would like to thank Dr. Joseph Schwerman for the many years of care he gave our father, and thanks to the staff at Inter-Lakes Nursing Home during George’s short stay. We would also like to thank George’s Angels for the loving care they gave him over the past two years at home. They are: Marilyn Dumoulin, Julia Norton, Lois Brundage, Donna Hozley and Kim Gould. We couldn’t have done it without you.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Schroon Lake. Interment will follow in Severance Cemetery.
