Fatal Accident Shuts Down Route 74 Tuesday

A large section of Route 74, east of Severance, was closed today after a fatal accident this morning.

Schroon Lake Volunteer Fire and Rescue members turned out to redirect traffic, at the intersection of Route 9 and Route 74.

Ticonderoga Town Police said the accident happened at about 9:25am when Tobia “Toby” J. Secone, 90, of Ticonderoga pulled his SUV into the oncoming path of a tractor trailer on Harris Point Way, a private road that leads to homes on Eagle Lake.

 From The Press-Republican:

“The impact was on the passenger side of the vehicle,” Police Chief Mark Johns said.

The chief said an autopsy will be performed Wednesday at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake to determine the cause of death.

Secone’s wife, Margaret A. Secone, 81, was airlifted to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington by a North Country Life Flight helicopter. She was in a stable condition late this afternoon, reported the Press-Republican.

Our condolences go out to the families of Toby and Margaret.
