Schroon’s Secret Foodie Society

For a while now, Chef Shelby Davis has known there are plenty of Foodies and great home cooks in these parts. She first noticed them when she organized Schroon’s first Chili-Cook Off  (now in it’s third year next February).

Her suspicions were confirmed at the sold out pop up restaurant nights (Thai, Indian, anyone?) at Mr. P’s Mountain Smokehouse, the restaurant she runs with partner Chris Palmatier.

“I’ve always known we have awesome home cooks here. I want to give them a chance to let them show off their stuff,” Shelby told Schroon Laker today.

The result is Underground Food & Craft Bazaar (More on crafts in another post!) an event where home cooks can “showcase their stuff, who don’t have a store front'>

Vendors will be able to sell their yummy goodies. Most of the spaces for home-cooks have been gobbled up, but call Shelby at (518) 5332-4300 to see if she can squeeze you in.

And for those of you ready to taste (and buy some holiday goodies), Save The Date: Saturday, December 14, at the Town Hall Meeting Room, part of Schroon’s Old Tyme Christmas Celebration.

Turkey Day Food News

Turkeys-before-blog.png

If you haven’t tasted Mr. P’s Mountain Smokehouse smoked turkey – you are missing out. It’s not just that smoky goodness that will get your taste buds zinging; it’s the fact that each turkey is stuffed with a fresh pineapple, giving a unique flavor and moist texture. The skin is rubbed with a garlic, salt and pepper blend, and each turkey is injected with a hard apple cider blend.

Turkeys are smoked for about an hour a pound, and we have birds from 10 to 26 pounds available.

Add some of Chef Shelby’s #glutenfree desserts or side dishes and your are all set. Hurry the deadline for ordering is today. Call 518-532-4300.

And over at Sticks and Stones, warm up by their gigantic fireplace, as you feast on a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner.

The restaurant will be open from 2pm to 10pm for their all-inclusive dinner, which includes soup or salad, turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, green bean amandine and pumpkin pie.

It’s a steal at $19.99 plus tax and gratuity. Call ahead (518-532-WOOD) and get a reservation, so not to miss out.

Sunday Eats

If it’s Sunday night in Schroon – then there’s lots of belly filing options in Schroon.

At Mr.P’s Mountain Smokehouse, Chef Shelby is doing her own take on a classic, The Kentucky Hot Brown sandwich.

It’s based on the Kentucky Hot Brown from the Brown Hotel in from Louisville, Kentucky. Back in 1926 the kitchen came up with an alternative to the traditional late night sandwich snack, which was ham and eggs.

The traditional Hot Brown is an open-faced sandwich of turkey and bacon, covered in Mornay sauce and baked or broiled until the bread is crisp and the sauce begins to brown

Shelby’s version:  “It’s an open faced sandwich, on a savory French toast roll with chipotle cranberry relish, smoked turkey, bacon, parsley and melted white cheddar.

We tried it and it’s yummy.

Over at Drake’s starting at 4 pm, they are serving up their Prime Rib special for $18. And at the other end of town it’s one of your last chances to get Prime Rib from Witherbee’s Carriage House, before they close down for their annual November, pre-Thanksgiving break.

And over at Sticks and Stones, which happens to sport the largest selection around of craft beers, it’s a Pinot Noir, which has got everyone buzzing. From Sticks and Stones:

"What Wine do You Love? We are LOVING Ventana's 2011 Pinot Noir. Available by the glass or bottle It has an explosion of vibrant cherry, raspberry, cranberry and a delicious hint of chocolate! With a touch of smokiness and vanilla, this Pinot Noir is #food #friendly and is perfect with just about any entree!"

Salud!

Spam And The Strand

Larry McNamara, owner of the Strand Theater, just loves Spam.

In fact on many occasions visiting his neighbors, Chris and Shelby at Mr. P’s Mountain Smokehouse, he’s simply ask for a Spam sandwich.

“We used to make a joke of it,” Shelby told Schroon Laker today.

“Larry’s favorite meal is grilled spam or fried spam and Tater tots”.

“He’s a spam aficionado, he knows spam trivia, and he has spam collector items.”

So when Shelby and Chris wanted to do their part in helping Save The Strand, it was a natural that they’d develop a sandwich, featuring, you guessed it, Spam.

So Chris smoked the Spam, Shelby made a special pineapple barbecue sauce. The sandwich comes with pulled pork on a Kaiser Roll. And of course there’s a side of Tater Tots.

It’s $12 and $5 of each sandwich goes to the Save The Strand Fund. This special runs for the month of November, so what are you waiting for?
