Time For More Fun: Are You Ready?

More fun, more sun – it’s another big week in Schroon and beyond  -- and we’ve got your handy, dandy guide, right here for July 26 - July 30

Monday

We are hearing this summer’s crops are a bumper, and the vendors at the Schroon Lake Farmer’s Market have the pick of the crop.

There are terrific salad greens and tomatoes – organic meats and fresh baked goodies. Pick up a bottle of homemade wine and you have yourself a complete meal. (9am on the lawn of the Town Hall).

On Monday night check out the talent on stage at the acoustic  band jam session – great tunes and a fun time for all. The Schroon Lake Arts Council proudly sponsors the event. Free! The fun starts at 7pm.

Tuesday

If your don’t have access to a boat on your vacation -- and you’d like to get out on the lake --the Schroon Lake Boat Tour, is a great way to get a view you may not have seen before. But the real reason for the tour is to learn about Schroon’s fascinating history.

The tour is full of rich details about the town’s grandest days, when  guests would arrive to lakeside resorts via steamboat, after a horse and carriage picked them up after a long train rides from New York. 11am.Get your tickets in advance from the Schroon Lake Chamber Office.

Tuesday’s Boat House Concert features the Boxcar Lilies. The show is at 8pm and tickets are an amazing value: $12 for adults and $5 for children. Proudly sponsored by the Schroon Lake Arts Council.

Wednesday.

There’s story time at the Library ay 10:30 am and after the little ones can read to Cooper the Therapy Dog. (Call the Library for more information: 518- 532-7737).

And Wednesday’s weekly Square Dance is practically made to put smiles on the faces of kids of all ages. We know of several generations of families who make this their one, go to event, while on vacation here in Schroon. It’s 7pm at the Bandstand in the Park. Free!

And tonight it’s the premiere of the Seagle Music Colony’s Production of “Into the Woods.” For ticket availability, please call the box off at 518-532-7875. 8pm.

Thursday

Check out the Arts and Crafts Market on the lawn of the Town Hall. There are several new vendors this year, and there’s always something new.

Save The Date: 2nd Annual Adirondack Shindig

By John Donovan

Kathy Hill of the Town of Horicon Historical Society, in cooperation with the Town of Horicon, is coordinating the 2nd Annual Adirondack Shindig set for Saturday, August 8th here in the Town of Horicon's Hamlet of Adirondack, NY.

Shindig is a fun-filled community event but with the noble, important purpose of raising funds to save and restore the now-Town-owned historic 1881 Union Church in Adirondack for use as a much-needed historical museum annex to the Society's existing historical museum in Brant Lake, there is insufficient space to display the thousands of historic regional artifacts dating back centuries.

The photos are from last year's 2014 Shindig, where hundreds of folks danced and enjoyed true North Country community spirit.

The church photo attachments shows that, while the 134-year-old church structure itself is in remarkably sound condition, the original stone foundation is collapsing under that remarkable church structure.

There is grave concern the failing stone foundation will not survive another winter and, if the foundation fails, so too likely would fail the church structure above.

With contributions from many hundreds of individual and businesses to date - and with the sustained support of the Horicon Town Board and especially Town Supervisor Matt Simpson, we are seeking State funding and are ready to award a competitively-bid construction contract to install a new concrete foundation but still have a $ shortfall preventing award of that $66,000 contract.

Hence, despite the north country community fun Shindig provides, its purpose is vitally important: to raise funds to replace the failing foundation and save the historic church for cultural, tourism and regional economy enhancing historical museum adaptive reuse.

Hip and Happening: South of Schroon: Kayaks, Rock and Roll and Hunting!

Get ready for the latest missive from The Tri-Lakes Business Alliance: From mighty Cindy Mead, with the minutes from their July 10 meeting. The gang meets this Friday at 9am at the Panther Inn.

Kayak Poker Run

An idea was brought up to have a Poker Run on Brant Lake as the ATV Poker runs are probably a thing of the past and these were great fundraisers for the Alliance.

Don Butler will head this committee and Cindy Mead, Christine Caunter, Al Tolomeo, & Sue Mead will help on the committee -- not sure if this will come together this year but will look into plans for 2016.

Carol Theatre

The Beatles concert on July 8 brought in 180 people with $690 going to the TLBA. Great time had by all! Try to get out and see these live shows, as the performances are always spectacular!

Next performance is Jim Gaudet & The Railroad Boys (Acoustic Americana Roots Music), July 22 @7:00 PM. $10 admission.

Next up: George Wonder Big Band (this was awesome event last year!) and it's on for July 25 @ 7:30 PM $20 admission.

We will also be having Vote Night at the George Wonder concert where you can vote for your favorite 'Conductor' and they will have the honor of directing the band that evening! Cast your vote for Fred Monroe, Helena Robbins or Donnie Butler!!!

Raffles

Are held each performance and restaurant gift certificates ($50) are needed and your establishment will be repeatedly announced on stage the night of the performance. Great tax write-off and we obviously recommend those who help us out with these raffles and other TLBA events.

We'd also like to thank Bob Swan for putting new items in the theatre building and the 'behind the scene' things he does to bring the building up to snuff, often declining the 'rent' we pay after each performance.

Advertising Representative

The TLBA and the theatre group need an individual to take over the advertising for our events and performances. There are a lot of free advertising opportunities out there and we need someone to co-ordinate the advertising campaigns for our events. If interested, please call Al at 518-494-5318.

 Sportsman's Weekend

Sponsored by the North Warren Chamber of Commerce. The Crossroads  -- over September 11,12 & 13 -- will have hunting and fishing lectures, guest speaker from a major hunting magazine editor and possible archery lessons and/or demonstrations. Events will be held at Dynamite Hill and both the Chester and Horicon Town Halls.

 Adirondack North Country Alliance

A meeting was held on Wednesday, July 15th at Long Lake. Please call Craig Leggett at 518-494-2324 for more information.

Woof Stock

The TLBA ended up with minimal cost for sponsoring an Adirondack Woof Stock - thanks to the sponsors, donations and generous monies received from the Town of Chester and the Town of Horicon, we've all ready reserved the 'entertainment' portion of the event (Hudson Valley Dock Dogs, Bean Town Disc Dogs & Doggie Fun Zone) and we're looking forward to having it again on Father's Day weekend 2016.

Farmers Market

Over 1,100 people attended the market July 8th breaking the 1,000 mark!!!!! Congrats to the ladies and gentleman who make this happen every week and thanks to all of our patrons!

Golf Outing

The annual Golf Outing to benefit the TBLA will be held Friday October 2nd at Cronin's. It’s a 1PM start with dinner afterward. Anyone willing to help with this please call Doug O'Brien @ #494-4565 or email him here
